Well it's 2oclock and I can't sleep, I'm 3 and a half weeks post Op and have been recovering well but all that seems to have gone out of the window after having my 1st physio today, I didn't seem to do much but I'm now sat covered in ice packs and chewing Oxycodene as if it's a bag of Maltesers, I'm sure tomorrow I'll feel the benefit. Has anybody else felt as if they have been in a battle with Mike Tyson after their session.x
oh Ann,
- that is terrible ... what did he/she do? or made you do?
I was in terrible shape prior to 1st THR ... was in denial for years and slowly was not able to do anything ..
it is normal to feel muscle pain ... a lot ... so bad I couldn't move ...
is your PT experienced in hip replacement surgery ? Mine wasn't and what I got was generic exercises for strengthening muscles --- with posterior approach to THR surgery, muscle and tendons were cut -
When is your next session ? Discuss this with your PT and seriously, if you are not happy with him/her asked for someone else ---
I hope you feel better today - take it easy --- listen to your body and be gentle with your self --
baby steps ...
big warm hug
renee
Hi Renee, the PT at present is the hospital based one and I think I'm so out of condition that any amount of gentle exercise seems like climbing a mountain. It's a new day and I've woken up aching but not quite as bad so onward and upward. Hope your well. X
good to know ... hospital based means that they are sort of specialized in working with post-op patients, I hope ...
you go girl --- stay with them , keep moving at your own pace ...
have a wonderful day
angel blessings
Bit early at 3 weeks isn't it ? Your post made me laugh so they haven't wounded your sense of humour . The physio asked me to get off the bed 2 days after the op and I remember swearing at him .. hell. U.K. NHS physio doesn't kick in at 3 weeks . At 3 weeks I could not have done anything . Have you checked his hairline for the numbers 666 😜😜
Dear Ann
I'm sorry that you had such a painful first session with the physio. You say that you had been recovering well. Can you tell us where you have got to with your recovery, what your mobility is like, your general health, fitness and age.
Cheers Richard
I did indeed check, I'm currently barred from all North West Hospitals untill I can behave myself. Where are you based Hazel I'm in sunny Manchester I was brought back to the ward at 5.30 and by 7pm I was hauled out of bed and was trundling round on a walker, my hubby walked in just as I turned back towards my bed and the look on his face spoke volumes.
How far on are you and how are you now coping.x
Hi Richard, I'm 62 and had been struggling for 5 years with O A of both hips plus spinal problems, the last 6 months had all but rendered me housebound. The physio actually said I'm doing really well, I've kept my excersises up from day 1 and I'm managing stairs at least twice a day plus small walks outside daily, that's only been for the last week with the walks. I've been assured if my recovery is good my surgeon will replace my right hip in November so I'm not going to push myself but I'm determined to get my life back.
I've developed a hot searing pain like hot pins and needles on both thighs I'm presuming its muscle and tissue have you experienced anything like this? X
Dear Ann
You have obviously had a tough few years! Thankfully I've not experienced the pain you have just described. If your x rays show all is un order I would be turning my attention to your back. If your back is not true this can cause pains in other parts of your body. I would make an appointment with a good chiropractor (not a McTimoney one) At least if your back is found to be fine this greatly narrows things down.
By the way what caused you to be banned from north west hospitals?
Cheers Richard
Will do Richard think I need to leave my spine untill after my 2nd Op and yes I will go for a recommended one. The hospital comment was in responce to Carol who asked about checking his hairline for 666😀x
I seem to remember (my first THR was Oct 2015), that my first physio was exhausting, probably because I had been less than fully mobile for some time. As the days and weeks went by, I was soon out and about, walking for miles. Sadly for me, I had to have revision 10 weeks after my THR, so I had to go through it all again.
Your body is just complaining about the exercise, but you need to get those muscles back and working again, and walking straight again as we tend to walk badly when in pain with OA. It's all in a good cause and it should pass in a day or so.
Best wishes
Graham
Thanks Graham, I've just posted another blog about a hot pins and needle like pain in my opposite thigh have you experienced anything like this, I'm hoping its just muscle or nerves. X
so precious ...
Hi Ann
I am 56 and in wet Wales . I am 10 months in and it took two rounds of NHS physio , hip class, private sports massage to get here . Still have groin pain but apart from that ok. Was due to see surgeon June but not heard a thing. One leg slightly longer than the other now . Have difficulty getting up from low seats but generally ok.
My first encounter with a physio is when he told me to get off the bed two days after op.. they had just taken catheter out. I laughed . He said get off the bed. I said I can't move ! He said get off the bed .. I did, after swearing like a trooper . You will get there . I binge watched the whole box set of Game of thrones after my op .. all that pain and battle spurred me on 😜
Isn;t it intersting, my physio told me if it was hurting I was only doing more damage to muscles and tissue. I had to go as far as I could without hurting, even if it was only 2 - 3 steps.
I walked 25 or more steps 12 hours after my surgery, they were amazed I could walk so far, by the following day I was walking double that, had to be careful because I was still dizzy from the strong painkillers, so all of this was supervised by physio.
As I came off the strong painkillers, struggled to move as much, but was handed an exercise sheet, of post hip exercises, lots on the internet, leg swinging, mini dips at the kitchen bench or bathroom bench, knees up and down in bed, pushing my feet out and toes towards knees, pushing knee joint into mattress using upper leg muscles, and after that just more and more walking. Stepping sideways, gently gently at first, and little steps, up and down the hallway with husband helping with balance.
I added treading water at the local heated pool after local GP told me my cut was healed enough and was no longer a risk of infection, again did the exercises as best I could in the pool, and treaded water instead of walking.
Hi Lynn, I feel tons better this morning I took it easy yesterday but still did a short outside walk which I'll replicate today. I went on YouTube and looked up the excersises that Nuffield Hospital put on there and will hopefully increase. How far on are you and how are you now ?x
I am two years on now since my last surgery, left hip, it was a big big problem as the surgeon added 12mm to an already long leg, 10mm longer than my right leg naturally, and then denied there was a problem to my face.
Had the cheek to even suggest at my age it didn;t matter that i could no longer wear high heel shoes anyway. at 65, I don;t think so.
Has a really big battle to get somebody to listen to me, and in the meantime ruptered disc in back, and two bulging dics above that, thank goodness I don;t suffer too much from that issue too much now, fingers crossed but going to be a long term problem I fear, as I have reduced feeling in legs.
Other than that very well, shoe lifts under right foot runners, and have learned to adapt and overcome, even if my walking style is a little strange.
Ann,
No i have not had that - mainly just thigh pain in the operated leg until I had 'woken up' the muscles and got them going again. At the time it seemed terrible, but now just a distant memory
