My 85 year-old relative had a hip-replacement operation 9 months ago. She is able to move around reasonably well. When she goes outside, she prefers to use one crutch rather than a stick because it makes her feel more stable. She uses a stick indoors. However, a nurse friend has told her that continueing to use the crutch could damage her hip. Is this correct? Should she make the effort to use a stick instead of a crutch? I've told her to use the crutch, because I believe the priority is that she does not fall, and the crutch improves her stability. Thanks.
Hi peter I've been told the crutch and as I've used both I would agree as the crutch keeps you more upright and gives more support.
A crutch is fine as it provides support and security when you are out if you feel you need it. The main thing is not to put too much weight on the crutch as your relation will become too dependent on it, but just to use it as a bit of support.
Hi Peter
I had problems after my 2nd THR son am now on 2 crutches permanently.
I've tried sticks but they dont give the support that a crutch gives
I cant see any reason why not to use one

Thanks for your help.
Dear Peter,
Honestly, wouldn't go on the advice on a nurse friend. I would ask the surgeon who performed the operation. A quick phone call to someone who really knows the "hip" should ease your mind. Not saying your nurse friend dosn't have good advice, but she is not an ortheopidic. Good luck. Ginny USA
