Is there anything that helps?

Hi All-
Have had a bout of IBS - M for a few weeks now. Started out as diarrhea and bloating and now I’m dealing with constipation and bloating the last couple days. The problem I’m having is the lower back pain. I have days where I have no pain at all, and then days it’s there all day (starting when I wake up with gas). It’s the type of back pain that aches and makes me feel like my lower back is out. I can also feel my stance is different from the bloating…like its jutting my stomach more outward and arching my back more. I notice my back even pops more in that area when I bend over to try and relieve this discomfort. I had taken Bentyl when I had the back pain with diarrhea which took it away, but I can’t take it with the constipation because it slows my bowels too much and it does nothing for the back pain with the constipation, anyway. I, also, have cramping all day off and on, but produce very little stool. Heat packs help some, but not a lot. Has anyone experienced this? What did you do to help the pain?

ive had the same going on two months..my D seems to have moved to C but sometimes M. i have bad bloat too.it makes me stand weird too. it all started after a stomach virus in june. i am seeinf a gastro tomorrow and demanding the breath test for SIBO. i am 99% sure this is whats causing my ongoing issues.

Try conventional, over the counter painkillers. I top it up with Buscopan.

I think it is also important to rule out hpylori if this has not been done already, again a simple breath test can show this if you have it. I have had it twice and it is not only long lasting, but can create problems if not dealt with. The second time I had it I had it for quite a long time and it had caused pre cancerous changes in my tummy. It is easy to deal with, anti biotic treatment. But really should be ruled out.
Also a gastroscopy is a good idea. I discovered through it that I did not have IBS but had gastritis. Different condition and different treatment.

Thank you Margaret. I have had all of those tests without issue.

hi charcey, i get chronic constipation which has put me in hospital before, due to the pain. you’re right using heat but you probably need a bowel softener, i take laxido or fybogel, as sometimes the pain becomes unbearable. you could ask your doctor or chemist about one of these. explain your symptoms to the chemist they are often better than the doctors. i hope you get sorted.

Thank you, Sam. Except…now I’m back to the loose stools. Ugh…its a never ending cycle.
Is the pain you’ve experienced in your lower back and hips?

Do you have the pain I described with it?

hi charcey, i used to get pain everywhere, i ended up rolling in agony somedays. i now finally have been told this is coeliac disease because i fought for the correct diagnosis. just check this is definitely ibs or not? you need to fight for the correct diagnosis.

My pain was generalised abdominal pain that moved about. Sometimes I had it in my lower back and hips too. The lower portion of the bowel wraps around the base of your spine; that’s why you can get pain there with IBS.

My pain seems to stay in this area. I do feel it in different parts of my bowel throughout the day, but this seems to be the “chosen” area for the last few weeks. Recently, I notice about 30min after I eat I’m running to the bathroom with intensified pain in those areas and cramping. It’s better for a short while (15-30min) after a BM (and all around worse in the AM than evening). In the evening, I don’t notice it much at all other than sore back muscles. Dicyclomine helps some. This is miserable. Hoping this doesn’t last for months.

Temporary relief of pain after a bowel movement is an IBS symptom. Try a food diary or the Low Fodmap diet to see what foods are causing you to run to the loo after eating and then avoid those foods.

Thank you for replying, Ian. I am so sorry you are feeling this way, but it gives comfort to know that there are others out there who are having similar issues. I hope it resolves for you soon.
