I thought I had an underactive thyroid about 18 months ago but was tested and told that it was very mild diabetes. That is under control but the problem is that although I eat very, very little I do not lose weight but I put it on immediately if I have more than one meal per week. I am not concerned about my weight as I have a small frame and body, but it seems odd that I never lose anything. More importantly however is that over the past eight months or so I have been going from hot to cold, but more hot and sweating a lot, and also have an uncontrollable anger. This is really worrying me as my brain is telling me not to get angry, that there is no reason to, but a feeling in my chest and stomach causes me to become almost physical in my anger. I want to punch, throw things, but at the moment I am just screaming at my husband. This is every day, perhaps twice a day, and there is no real reason for it. But I start screaming and saying awful things and just can't stop. I am not depressed or anything like that; it feels more physical than anything. I am going to my doctor soon but as he doesn't always take things seriously I would like to have some information before I see him.
Do not worry, it is quite common to have more than one auto-immune disease such as diabetes and under active thyroid. I would guess that your thyroid is struggling and is going from under active to over active and back. This happens, you sound as though you might be overactive at present but I am not medically qualified so I cannot tell you for certain. I would go to your doctor and get another thyroid test while you feel like this.
Hi
I understand that thyroid problems and diabetes often go together. I have twins now aged 27 who both have Type 1 diabetes and we took part in a twins study at St Bartholomews Hospital in London. They are certain that as I have hypothyroidism, my mother and my monther-in-law also do, that is why my children have diabetes.
I was eventually diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 1995 after it had progressed to Myxoedema, I piled on the weight, my hair fell out, my skin was flaking off, my brain was addled and I lost the use of both hands for 7 months. These problems gradually returned to normal but I was told by my GP that I would never lose the weight!
Having tried in vain for many years to lose weight I came across a book called The Fast Metabolism Diet by Haylie Pomroy (approx £8 from Amazon). The diet is like no other I have ever tried and means eating three main meals and two snacks a day (recipes included in the book). You eat all food groups in a specific way and she explains what works and why it works.
I went from size 24 to size 12 in 5 months and lost 4 stones (56 lbs) in weight. This has changed my life in so many ways. People don't recognise me and have asked me how I did it so I have told them about the book. I have people ringing me to tell me how thrilled they are with the results. The book is fascinating reading as Haylie Pomroy is animal trained and medical trained and speaks such sense. The great thing too is that I have maintained the weight loss even though I am not on the diet now but still follow the principals. You need to eat or your body will stay in 'starvation mode' and will store every ounce that you eat.
It certainly worked for me so I am pleased to pass this on to you and hope it does for you too. Wishing you well. Mandy
