Is this normal? Feeling discouraged...

Hi all,

I am concerned and wanted some feedback. I have been on 25mg of sertraline for 13 days now. I have had alotvofvside effects. I thought I was past the vomiting but. I did vomit this afternoon. It was a couple hours after eating oatmeal. I am just concerned that I vomited almost two weeks in am only on 25mg. I know we are all different but was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I felt really good yesterday and today has been awful. Is this normal? Feeling concerned and discouraged.

Thank you

sorry to hear u are having a rough time holly, sertraline seems to be one of the ssri meds which people report as more likely to have an upset stomach when taking it or being sick.

i did have the upset stomach myself when i started, for a couple of weeks.

you could keep going a little longer and hopefully you will adjust to it, but if it becomes too much of an issue perhaps you could try a different ssri med such as citalopram.  perhaps speak to yor doctor if your being sick side effect does not pass soon

Thanks for your reply. I took this med for many years and it worked great. I went off a couple months ago due to some medical issues. It was gallbladder. I have had a heck of time getting back on it. I felt really good yesterday and today feel very sick and vomited. Is that normal to have such a good day and then vomit the next? I know it Is up and down but just not sure if the vomiting like that is normal this far in especially after I thought it was settling some. Did you have upset stomach only or actually vomiting too..? I just never had this hard of a time starting it before.... Tried lexapro -not good. Switched back to sertraline basically two weeks ago...

i tried lexapro in the past also and didnt get on with it, i get on much better with citalopram instead of lexapro (escitalopram), even though lexapro is supposed to be the new and improved version of citalopram.  grrr

anyway, i didnt have vomiting no, just upset stomach, and nausea (so kind of felt like being sick but didnt actually throw up).  also lost appetite for a week or so

im not sure what ot suggest, maybe try taking the sertraline with a banana,  perhaps that might make it absorb in your stomach more easily for you?  or, take it with more water than you usually do? that might help

ps. if you threw up after eating oatmeal,  maybe give oatmeal a break for a few days, see if that helps?

best of luck ok, really hope it passes soon

..actually, just thinking some more, are you on a generic version of sertraline (so, not the brand name itself, called 'zoloft'?)

there are some variations between the different generic brands; the pills outer coatings and some other small factors are different between the brands, so some people might find that a certain generic brand might irritate their stomach for example

perhaps you could ask your doctor if you could switch to a different generic of sertraline if that's possible where you live (or you could try to get the original brand called 'zoloft' but depending on where you live, it might be more expensive to do that)

So sorry to hear you're having such a rough time with this . . . I felt nauseous and used travel bands on my wrists . . . they did help.   Also, could your doctor prescribe something to protect your tummy until your system settles down?   Hope you feel better soon x

It is a generic brand I have used in the past just fine. I just had my gallbladder removed about weeks ago. My body has been a mess. I just increased today to 50 mg. I hope it doesn't get to much worse.
