It has been sugested that I take up swimming.

I am constantly been given advice from my family. They think they know more than my three doctors. The current suggestion is to go swimming. I am not talking swimming laps of the pool but rather one of those shallow pools where I can have my weight supported by the water and then just do some walking. I have told them that exercise is good for the short term but has no long term benefits, and that it could even be harmful. I went for a walk with my wife last year to look at some prise winning gardens. I was not able then to go the distance. The next day I phoned a friend about the increased pain I was expressing. He said don't worry, the pain will only last a week or so. I was in bad pain for a bit longer than the week and then the paid slowly reduced over the next week or so. **So my question is**: Do you recommend swimming as either a long term or even a short term benefit. Yes! I used to go swimming all he time but it’s a little cold right now!

its so frustrating isn’t it that something pleasurable causes us pain, i do not swim, only because i can’t, but i do yoga, this is difficult & after a 6 month absence from doing it i realised how much it had helped, i find that the deep breathing/relaxation part if it very helpful, wishing you luck

yes, yes and yes again. Swimming is EXCELLENT. Not only will the weight supported movement needed be good for increasing oxygen to the muscles, which will itself reduce pain but also the meditative effect of gently bobbing around in the water will have benefit to - much like a kind of mindfulness exercise. The tendency with fibro and a lot of other pain conditions is to avoid movement or exercise because of the discomfort but even your doctors will tell you ‘move more hurt less’ - its true.

It would out of this sample that swimming is good.

I shall investigate where and when the pool is only available to people such as myself.

Even when the muscle is in a cast, one leg that is flexing daily is stimulating the muscle fibres, don’t stop moving is key, you’ll only get weaker, swimming is ideal compared to bodyweight exercises and weights because of less tendon damage.
I was recommended by a Massage therapist but have later gotten injuries via weights, do swimming :slight_smile:

absolutely, just sitting in the water.,stimulates the blood…hydrotherapy is excellent for fibro. at first it is very tiring after and you always feel a tad sore after too…it does get kess sire after the more you do it,but it is the best, if the only excercise we can do..try to percevere..ut really helps..ive had fibro over 30years now and it is a great help in times of a flare up,.be blessed..have a lovely weekend..

I find swimming way too painful for my knees.

Now that winter is coming on I might have another go at the swim.
