It really does take 6 months, and then some

Exactly 6 month update.Still in pain most days from Groin but much better elsewhere and can walk quite fast.Try to avoid stairs as I suffer later on.If I over do it scar stings.Still under surgeon as groin pain is not going anywhere and second bout of NHS physio.Cannot lift leg to put socks on as it hurts. Can stroll along fairly quickly and go for longish walks.Getting in and out of car hard so I lift my own leg in.Starting to feel the benefits but not out of the woods yet.Sleeping better but still woken a few nights a week with groin pain.So sort of good and bad news.Dont regret it as bad bone on bone pain gone but still got other probs and permenant leg length difference. Is this anyhthing anyone can relate to? do you think it will get better than this ?xx

Hi Hazel, Glad you're starting to get a long better ! I'm getting better slowly too, still having problems with stairs and feeling unsteady. Can't walk far without my stick but sleeping better etc. So slowly does it and keep doing the exercises 🚢

Dear Hazel

I'm so sorry to hear that you are not where you want to be yet. Not knowing what your leg length difference is all I would say is that this may need to be addressed by a specially modified shoe.

It is more than likely if the difference is significant that it is causing your whole frame to be twisted and will obviously effect your back and this will effect your whole body in various ways. Once you have this sorted out you may find everything starts to improve.

Good luck

Richard

PS. When I saw my ankle surgeon a couple of months ago about a revision he spotted that I had a one cm leg length difference on the leg on my hip replacement side and I simply was not aware of it!

Hey πŸ‘‹πŸ½ Hazel!! I feel you dear. I'm almost 8 months in from hip revision after I dislocated first one. I'm suffering with I think is nerve pain in front and side of thigh. Skin feels stretched and first incision bothers me. Get buttock pain. Like you no more of the bone on bone pain but now have these other things to deal with. I can't bend my leg and bring to chest as knee hurts like hell when I try it. Can't lift my leg up to high yet. I'm using a swivel cushion to get in and out of vehicle which has really helped! You can also use a plastic bag to help you slide in and out. It's been a slow recovery and being 6 weeks non weight bearing with no hip exercises or flexion past 80 degrees hinder my recovery. Right now I'm suffering a bit with groin pain and nerve and muscle pain and weakness. Also still limping. Had 6 months physical therapy. Am back at gym. Some days are great but then I get days like today not good. 😞 But keep up the good work you are doing it will get better. Some of us heal faster and do better but we all have different reasons for surgery and we all heal differently. Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery. Prayers going your way. Hugs πŸ€—LD

I walk slowly still and am using a cane still. Stairs are hard. Going up is ok but one step at a time but coming down is difficult as my oposite knee is bad and it hits to bend to much so I go sideways!!! 😞

May take a year or longer. Keep exercising and walking. You may want a second opinion if it continues. Everyone is different but you should be further along. Just my opinion

hi hazel,

I hear you --- sort of go and stop and go situation - Well, I think you are doing great - one step at a time, darling - slowly but surely ... it is disappointing when we feel it as a set back and were hoping to be further along -

That mysterious groin pain that flares up ... it is not pain, really, but tightness -

I realize that I forget to stand up straight before taking a step - not taking my time (anymore) -

Of course it will get better ... maybe slow down your pace a bit -

hang in there

big warm hug

Dear Hazel

Some further thoughts. Try the hold yourself correctly but relaxed and make every step a good one, do not be concerned about speed as that will come naturally.

When doing you exercises I suggest that when you experience discomfort you hold your position and as you can steadily increase pressure.

Also as I previously suggested do get your shoes sorted so that your leg lengths are,as near as possible the same length.

Finally do consider seeing a chiropractor to check that your back is in a balanced state because if it is not no amount of exercises are going to sort you out .

Good luck

Richard

If I were you I would see a podiatrist, someone who specialises in taking casts of your feet, checks your gait etc, if you can afford it.  Your continuing groin pain might be coming from altered gait due to difference in leg lengths.

This would not be cheap, but I know when I had mine done, a few years ago, it sorted out some foot pain I had at the time and made me more comfortable, at the same time as properly aligning my walking.  It has not saved me from having a THR (13 March), but I think the hip was probably not going to be saved anyway, due to a couple of severe accidents since I had my feet looked at.

I plan to go back to the same person to see if I need new casts made, thicker or thinner etc, before I attempt to cover too many miles with my new hip.

i hope you find a solution.  Groin pain at 6 months sounds a bit unacceptable.

Hi Hazel

I'm 16 weeks now and have the groin pain. Did they say whst is is? I haven't been offered any physio so thinking of going privately as I feel I'm not improving as I should. Can't lift my leg either as I have no muscle strength in the operated leg getting frustrated now.

Julie

Hi Hazel,

I'm glad that some things are improving, but so sorry that you are still in lots of pain. Wishing you all the best and hope that you continue to improve steadily, Judith

Hi Richard

It's only 6 mm and I wear shoe inserts but can feel it when I am standing barefoot even tho it's small ...

Thanks Linda we are in the same boat . It's funny lifting your own leg up over the sill of the car . Bad groin pain last night I am going to ask for MRI scan xx

Yes Rose I saw a NHS podiatrist who gave me shoe inserts and now discharged me . Nobody really knows what the groin pain is which is a mystery ... it's a painful sort of agitated throbbing right in the beginning of the groin in the deep crease at the top of your thigh next to your privates.

No body seems to know Julie ! I have to do exercises to build leg up and paid a fortune for private massage to loosen thigh muscles but the groin is a mystery ....

Dear Hazel

I would think that there is a different issue at play here. If your surgeon cannot see anything wrong that could be causing you the ongoing pain if you could afford it I would strongly recommend that you see a good chiropractor but not a McTimoney one. It is a process of elimination and the chiropractor may well be able to help.

Cheers Richard

Dear Hazel im so glad you are doing little bit better. I know how you

Feel wit leng leg disripency. I believe it wìll get better wit time.

Keep excersice, go for walk if you can. I hope all will turn fine. Just have

patience please. My second hip hurt more and more and need to be done. Insole help but not rally comfortable. I don't sleep very well also. My operated hip is now not so bad now much pain hardly any just some time I have a spasm which wake me up.Some people take longer than other.

You look after your self be kind to your body . I have to go trough again I'm scared but I reckon on the end will be worse it. Least I hope.so or I

Could end up worse.

Let us know what they find. As for leg discrepancies, fortunately I did not have that. I was a little over 1&1/2 inches short prior to surgery. Now I'm same length. And that is where I'm having issues because my muscles were short before surgery now they are being stretched.

More like 12 months Hazel.

It does get better - with every week/month that passes, but it all takes much longer than any of us expect given that it's such a sucessful and 'easy' medical procedure.

It's easy for the medical profession, not for the poor person who has been through this (admittedly wonderful) operation and the gruelling recovery. When you get 'out the other side' it really is worth it, but it takes  T I M E .

when groin discomfort flares up, I put some heat on them - that and sometimes an ointment for stiff muscles -- it is not really heloing though, but just feels good -

There is this big muscle right there (forgot the name) and mine are just so tight and short (2 THR surgeries) from years of bad walking etc.

My physical therapist  gives me a deep tissue massage (scar issue) - a very painful treatment -

All is well  and you are doing good - keep going gently -

angel blessings
