Itchy Cast

Anyone have an suggestions of how to deal with an itchy cast? I am aware that I am not supposed to put anything down the cast to scratch etc. Its becoming unbearable now.

In your case, suck it up.!! Way too dangerous after surgery to risk infection. Sorry!

Get some snacks, play some games, and take your prescribed meds. You're on a long Journey, and itching, aching, swelling etc are Normal. Try to elevate it more, swelling causes itching. So does infection.

***If you are concerned, go to Hospital asap, to rule out any major problems.

Learn to play an instrument. I took up Ukulele.

I just kept trying to keep my mind off of it.. Sounds weird but mind over matter.. I had major surgery and joint fusion done and some days I wanted to cut it off! When I tried to ignore it it goes away.. It's healing and the skin is drying out.. I don't miss the cast! Soon enough it'll be off.. Don't scratch especially if you have stitches..! Bad idea! good luck! If it gets too bad call doctor and tell them it needs to be checked

Hi Danielle. Thanks for the advice, it was one of those things that was just driving me absolutely mad. Thankfully its stopped now, but I think it will happen again.

Yup it will! Sorry for the bad news😂 I was going nuts after surgery but I convinced my dr to take the cast off at four weeks.. Maybe not the safest idea with 3 kids but was over it!

Yeah i bet you were. I'm only in a back slab at the moment, but get my proper cast next week. Its going to be interesting these next few weeks.

My doc said to blow air down the cast using a hairdryer with a cold button. Works great!

Hi Luke, I heard the cold blow dryer works too.  I tried mind over matter and can you ice it?  It may be itchy with swelling and the incision healing.  Good luck, I know mine would come and go so hopefully yours goes too!

Once you get a proper cast on its a lot better. The backslab moves and depending on who does it can irritate it. I had 3 backslabs before cast and first 2 were done by patient champions. 3rd one done by a nurse trained in ortho and cast done my ortho trained guy. The last two were so much more comftorble and easy to get on with. I've been fortunate and not suffered much itching but use a coat hanger if I need to. I also find keeping my leg raised helps in this warm weather so my leg doesn't swell with heat.

Anniea. Yeah I find that I can feel my leg moving around inside the backslab which is also irritating! Thanks for the advice.

Hi Lisa. Thanks for the tip about blowing cold air etc. I will give it a go. Yeah I find the itching does come and go.

I'm still casted and have been for about 5 weeks now, when it itches I put ice on it and that seems to help with the itching. I also try to ignore it as much as possible, although not very easy. But the ice seems to work well for me. Good luck!

Have you tried scratching your cast, your brain may think you are scratching your leg. I get pain in my toes, but I have no foot.It was amputated 2 years ago, but if I rub my shoe, the pain goes away. Try it, it may help.Just a suggestion.

I have had a brace on my leg and it did help me, but I have never had a cast on any part of my body. Hope someone else can help you with your problem

So I finally fot my stitches out to day and got a proper cast. I'm going to be non weight bearing for at least the next 6 weeks.
