Your life does come back once you start taking Thyroxine. I have been on this for 20 years. I too was like you feeling desparate and absolutely awful, but after 2 - 4 weeks the change was amazing. Keep perseverring!!

I'll tell you something positive! The weight does come off and you do feel better,it is not instant. It has taken a while to get to the point you are at now so it will take a while to reverse it. Thyroxine is a slow acting accumulative drug so be patient. You will loose weight because you will metabolise the food you eat not store it and you will have more energy to increase your exercise, but even athletes dont start running before they are fit to do so, gradually build up!
I am 48 and was diagnosed with underactive thyroid 2 years ago because I was gaining weight when not eating, how can you get fat on 800 cals a day? well I did.I was never a slim size 8, but when I was up to 13 stone and knackered I knew all was not well. I was on drugs at the time for breast cancer which maked me tired and gain weight but my brilliant GP took bloods to check.
I was started on a low dose and even then started to loose weight and was able to go to the gym...after six months I had lost a stone, without trying! I am struggling a bit to loose the rest now but that has more to do with cake and chocolate consumtion than the condition! Having gone to extremes of not eating to try to loose weight I am making the most of being able to maintain my slightly round figure and not get fatter and still enjoy the naughty things in life!
If you have only recently been diagnosed your GP will gradually increase your dose. I did have a spell where my dose had been increased and my poor heart was tap dancing, it settled once my body accepted the dosage.
Be patient,(says I as I am annoyed with myself today cause I am knackered, but then I was at cub camp with 40 boys last weekend and been working since, plus I am not 21 anymore!) Best of luck

Hi i have recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism after keep visiting the doctor for approximately 18 months to 2 years. I had all the symptoms and my TSH was high but my doctor kept saying to come back for another blood test in 6 month intervals as my thyroid was failing. In August this year i asked for a test for menopause as it seems to have simular symptoms. I then got a phone call to say my TSH was high and my T4 was very low.
I was put on 50mg of levothyroxine and are now taking 100mg. I do feel less tired and the aches and pains are not quite so bad. but i feel i have to pace myself now. My main problem is my weight and its nice to know that some people do adventually start to loose it
