So I have just been diagnosed with herpes simplex 2, genital herpes. It has been a little over a month since I have contracted it and I am worried because I have no indication of whether I have it on my genitals or in my mouth since I have not had any outbreak. I had given that partner oral sex as well as vaginal, so does this mean I have it in both places? If I have genital herpes in my mouth, does it mean I cannot kiss my family on the cheeks, share drinks, or share utensils? Does this mean when I have children I couldn't kiss them or use my spit to clean something off their faces? I am terribly depressed, I want children so badly but I couldn't live with the fear of possibly giving my child this virus.
I understand your fears but you will notice in time they will subside a little as you learn to adjust and learn more about it. My biggest question is how did you know you just contracted it a month ago without an outbreak? Did you have a positive blood test and was it igg and not igm?
I have HSV1 AND HSV2. it's sad that I do . I found out when I was pregnant . I was devastated. I thought I was going to have a c section. My doctor said" don't worry". I was able to be on meds. Starting at 35 weeks into my pregnancy. So,when I'm ready to give natural birth to my baby girl. She will not contract HSV . My daughter doesn't have HSV. Im able to kiss my child . Even taking a bath with her.And I'm very happy about that.
If i start to get symptoms. I wont kiss her anywhere. I stay away from her .
My partner says he doesn't have it. Which is hard for me to believe . I just live my life to the fullest . I'm happy I'm able to even be a mother .I'm very blessed
What the difference between igg and igm?
Herpes can take some investigating at first. Can I ask you what prompted you to get tested and what type of test did you get. Igg are mature antibodies while Igm are premature which often signals a recent infection. However Igg tests are the most reliable and should be done at least 3-4 months post risky event.
Igg is the antibody test for hsv that is present once a persons body has built up enough antibodies to be present in the blood and stays for life whereas igm is similar test but the igm produces a positive only at specific times (initial outbreak, recurrent outbreaks) and then disappears thus may return a false negative, it can not distinguish between hsv 1 and hsv 2, the igm test sometimes mixes up the viruses within the same family like chickenpox so it could create a false positive as a result the igm test is not recommended as it is considered unreliable.
The next person I had intercourse with was an ex boyfriend who had not been with anyone sexually since he had last been with me. He had lesions appear about a week after having sex with me and was very concerned so I had went to get blood tested. It was an IGG and my index levels were through the roof.
Thanks Jenny, this makes me feel better knowing that it is possible to safely give birth naturally.

The Igg test is reliable which means you must have caught it within the past months. So you have no other symptoms at all ? I would speak with a GP at an STD clinic if possible to find out what your options are to avoid transmission to others. Don't forget that hsv2 likes to live below the waist and HSV1 above. I would not worry about kissing unless a cold sore would appear. Have you tested for both hsv1 as well ?
Nope I have no symptoms, I probably would have had no clue I had the virus if I didn't get tested. I had tested positive for hsv1 as well but have never had a cold sore in my life.
Do you get cold sores that's why you don't kiss your kids ?
I don't have any kids and I have never had a cold sore in my life. I would not have known I had hsv 1 and 2 if I didn't get blood tested for it. I'm worried about what it means to be actively shedding though and if I could pass it along that way.
What you've explained is possible asymptomatic viral shedding. Viral shedding simply means the virus has surfaced to the skin and is active. Asymptomatic viral shedding means the same but with no visible symptoms.
My sister in law has hsv 1 only with 5 boys and only 2 have actually caught hsv 1 but it doesn't mattzr. They live happy healthy lives and don't give the cold sores any attention. As long as you limit kissing when cold sores are active either in the mouth or outside on your face. 80-90℅ of the population have hsv 1 so no problem kissing your future kids.
I have not gotten a cold sore since July 2014. I kiss my daughter all the time. But if I feel a tingling sensation. I stay away . Eating healthy , resting and less stress helps not to get outbreaks .
What about in your genital area
So it is like an outbreak but invisible because it is just skin cells shedding? It doesn't mean that I'll continuosly be viral shedding?
I have not had any lesion on my genitals either
Thank u
