Ive lost my sense of smell !

Hello everyone-

Has anyone lost their sense of smell? Have had this bx for 20 yrs and only now cant smell a thing!  Taste is affected as well........

For me this has been an expected side effect of the disease. My advice is to keep your airways and sinuses as clear as possible

I lost my sence of smell about 15 years ago. I do have asthma as well as Bronchiestis,PA,ABPA,and also Nasal polps.I had over the years 3-4 Sinus surgurys and next week am having another one. I get inflamation in my frontal sinus cavity and also fluid draining from my right ear. From time to time I am able to smell certain foods but its not all the time. Like if I am outdoors and I come in and my wife has been cooking something I can smell for a quick moment. Not sure how long I have had bx but 6 years ago I was dianosed with it but for many years I had lung issues but no one ever told me I had the bx until I was hospitalized with pneumonia. Do you use a saline rinse forr your nose? That has helped me to smell better from time to time.

I also have little sense of smell. It comes and goes. I'm 67 yrs, and I have had bronchiectasis for years and I think that with so many sinus and chest infections, my sinuses have lost a lot of sense of smell, which affects the sense of taste.  Something will look good to eat, but when I go to taste it, I don't get much flavor.

My brother has asthma, and he has no sense of smell, he's 66 yrs.

Hello Elizabeth,

Have you ever  been to an

'ear.nose.and throat' specialist about the loss of smell? what does your respiratory spec say about it?

I am 62 and have had brox for 25 yrs.

cheers

No, I have not seen an ENT specialist about it.  Years ago I did mention it to my pulmonary specialist, as I remember, he said it was due to sinus infections. It seems like I'm always getting post-nasal drainage, so after a while, my sinuses will drain enough for me to be able to smell somewhat.

I think it's just a side effect of this illness, Beth

Hi,

My son is 9 years old. He is having similar problem and doctor diagnosed him with "primary ciliary dyskinesia with bronchiectasis".

The doctor here has done some test on his nose. Notice the Cilia function inside the nose is disfunction. He can't smell. You may need to double check with your doctor if he or she can doe some test and find out if your nose cilia has any similar condition.

Hope this little info help and wish you get well soon.

Best regards, XL
