7 weeks tomorrow since THR.
Today I walked the dog at a fast pace for around 1.5 miles - hip felt absolutely fine.
I also ran today - ran! First time in about 2 years or so - amazing and felt absolutely great.
Cannot believe how good I am starting to feel now - still got pains, aches and restricted movement due to muscle damage/weakness but still feel as though I'm getting my life back now.
See the consultant on Wednesday as follow up to the operation - hopefully will be cleared to start driving etc.
Stay positive fellow hippies.
Blimey you ARE doing great, running!! You sound as tho you have a real positive attitude, but be careful not to overdo it. I started driving short distances (to take the dog down to the riverbank) at 4 weeks so you should have no problem being given the all clear by the sounds of it. Take care and stay well.
Hi Mark,
Well done, I am 7 weeks too but couldn't quite go as far as you as for running well maybe in a few months lol, I haven't run in a few years lol. I love hearing how everyone else is doing, and also realise that even you are 20 years younger than me and probably fitter before we started, so I don't expect to be as good. But daft as it sounds it gives me something if not all to aim for.
I am walking about a mile every day sometimes more, not very wuickly but I get there, I am doing more and more round the house without my stick, although when I get tired I find my penguin comes out again lol. but here we keep going onward and upward xxxxxxxx Lovely to hear from you .xxxx
Thanks for sharing good positive stuff for the of us in early weeks and sometimes thinking we will never be normal again.
Wow that's fantastic Marc. U sound like u are doing so well. Makes me yearn my op all the more. Have no quality of life due to pain. And strong pain killers aren't really helping either. Have appointment with 2nd opinion doc on 22nd July but waiting for a call from 1st doc this week so fingers crossed I'll be done in the next month. Just watched a video on Facebook of a middle aged mum jiving with her grown up son & said that'll be me on my 50th in January next.
Hi Mark
Well done you - I bet you are so pleased at your progress
I am 5 weeks tomorrow and see my consultant first time post op so we'll see what he says regarding lifting restrictions. Doing well and so nice to hear from someone a bit further down the recovery chain
Run, gosh I haven't felt like doing that for some years makes me realise just how long I have had the arthritis for, I just didn't realise what it was that was causing the pain. With it starting as groin pain, you never think of it being a hip problem, maybe just a strain.
Wow, there's hope for me yet!
I am starting to walk a bit with no sticks now but it does bring out the aches and pains in both legs. I suppose all those muscles that have been used to penguin gait have got to readjust. Our bodies are amazing things aren't they when you consider what we put them through . Such wonderful powers of recovery!
Lovely and so encouraging to hear your positive post
Wishing you even more great milestones to reach
Kind regards Linda xx
good morning mark ... so good to read about your accomplishments ... keep doing what you are doing ... and give your self a pat on your back for a job well done ...
take care, don't overdo it - warm hug
renee
Dear Mark,
Wow, talk about reclaiming your life.
someone here with the best of intent will say 'oh do be careful/ you shouldn't run/ drive/ have sex/ play scrabble'.
THOUGH
their messages also say rest and hurry slowly, which for lucky folk like you and me making a speedy recovery does make sense, cos I for one am likely to overdo it! These muscles do take up to 8 months to recover, and we need to remember this too....
AND, very well done. Tis lovely to run again, even for just 5 minutes
Take care
Mic
Mark that is brilliant, and so are you all. Not got my date for my op yet, but I know even tho I am scared rigid I know you guys are all there, all I want is to stop walking like a 90 year old wonky donkey. I know reading all bout you all I can be normal !! again, just takes a bit of time.
So thank you and good luck to you all.
Sue
I don't want anyone to think I went out for a run as that would be pushing it too far but I held my 3 year olds hand and we ran together down the street for around 50m - felt great being able to do this.
Hi Sue
Easy to say, I know, but please don't worry
I got so down in the dumps prior to my operation, as like you, I walked like a drunken duck and was in dreadful pain! This operation is life changing - you will not regret it for a minute. Patience is key as this is a big operation, but progress happens every day. I am 5 weeks post op, no pain and can walk a short distance with no crutches and no limp ( have to concentrate a bit on new walking pattern) but every day it gets better.
Look forward to it and trust the medical folk because they are brilliant
You will be good as new soon!
Kind regards Linda xx
Hey that's still progress and how lovely to be able to do that now with your daughter. My son's 37, so I don't think I'll be running down the street with him, but maybe with the grandchildren!

Hi Mark
Great to hear you are getting your life back, sounds like you are brilliantly
I'm 4 weeks and doing quite well, nice to know what you are doing at 7 I know we are all different but I think it helps to hear positive stories like yours, so well done, and long may it continue
hope all hippies out there have a good day
lots of love
Carol😄 Xx
Wow Mark, sounds as if you're doing fab!
I actually see my consultant when I'm only 5 weeks post op, I'm hoping he is able to lift restrictions at this point.
dear Sue ... welcome to this loving hippie group ... we have all been where you are, so really, we know ... you will find that we are real, honest, compassionate and loving - sharing our woes, worries, concerns etc but also our accomplishments and victories, no matter how small or big - it is all a big deal to us either way ... so please come back and ask whatever you need an answer for ... oh, and great sense of humor too -
priceless for many of us ....
warm hug
oh, she must have loved that !!!!!
That's great Mark, I'm 2 weeks a hippy today and starting to feel a lot frustrated because I haven't been able to exercise in ages. I have to resist the running now as the surgeon warned me that if I run on my new hip it will wear faster and I am 45 so want it to last. I can't wait to get back on my race bike though and am seeing the surgeon next week so hope I can get back to a stationary bike.
Its just fabulous to hear progress from fellow hippies further down the track as you know not every day is fabulous, i overdid things a little yesterday and have had to force myself to walk a little slower today due to pain.
Thanks for the 7 week update, it is appreciated.
😄👍🏃🚴🌈💌
Hi Mark,
well done...it's good to read about our progress. I haven't tried running but I go up and down the stairs using both legs...amazing! The muscle pain is to be expected, I don't mind it , as long as I don't feel that other dreadful pain of walking bone on bone! That has dishappeared completely...such a relief!
Have a good day!
Ella
It is frustrating I know but I found each week, especially after week 4, the improvements came very quickly. Running is really not recommended especially in us young ones (44 here) although some people do manage to run marathons but you have to wonder on the longer term implications of that.
I'm hoping to get my bike out soon too - been a while since I was able to do that.
