Hi all, just back from physio. 6 weeks post op rthr. What was bad hip pretty much pain free and advised on some new exercises to build up muscles damaged during op. Was told to get out more to build up confidence in getting back to normal day to day stuff. I do have some pain in both knees and have a 'bakers cyst' behind the right knee. I fear the worst down the line. My next big hurdle will be returning to work..... I don't feel ready yet. I have come to rely on this forum quite a bit over last 6 weeks and want to thank everyone taking part. The hints and tips have been invaluable. My only regrets have been not pushing Nhs /gp to go for operation earlier. My consultant said he would have operated a year ago if he had of seen xray results then.
Hi Andy,
Heal well....
At hospital they said knee pain was often referred pain in first two months as we heal....I do hope so!
I work as a Counsellor from home so restarted at 4 weeks just fine.

Mic
Thanks Mic. I have mild OA in left hip but never had my knees looked at. I hope it's a good while before I have to have further surgery, for one thing work will stop paying me. My work is office based but also involves travel to various towns and cities esp London. I'm not sure what my problem is but just couldn't face it at the mo'. The gospel according to physio told me usual restrictions still apply. My plan is to get out of house more in next couple of week, have a pint or two and get used to my brave new world.
Hi Andy,
Glad you have found this forum useful. I have too.
I am 4 weeks out from a LTHR revision but I have to wait 6 weeks before I begin walking. I too have a bakers cyst. I can feel your fear of going out to build your muscles. It helps to take a crutch , or cane just in case you need it.
Just boldly go out and make it happen! You can help me when I begin to walk again.
Take care,

Dawn, I will keep an eye on the forum specifically for that reason. I am getting around the house without aid but I do keep them around just in case. It's just the great outdoors that I'm 50 / 50 with just now. Especially dealing with the city centres where I have spent most of my life. The end of my drive seems like a good place to stop.. ha. Maybe not that bad and I'm sure things will click soon. Thanks again, what a wonderful little community we have. X
Hi Andy
Don't worry it does take a little while to be confident in going out of your comfort zone again.
Driving, although you've done it every day for years and years can be a little daunting when you are given the OK but I have gone out in the least busy times to get used to it and it doesn't take long before you're confident again. I never worried at night before but after my op, my first night drive, I was very anxious.
Even just going out of your drive is daunting cos its a mixture of scared - can in do it ? What if I get stuck etc will I get back ? None of these were ever an issue before but now major concerns lol ! I think I'm OK now I've been back at work , so drove there and back every day and had a few appointments this week, so been out driving every day so back to normal - i think lol!
Maybe a night drive tomorrow, so I'll see how that goes.
Good luck , start with little short outings when nobody much about, on a nice day.
Hi Andy.
I wouldn't worry too much about knee pain post op,I had the same and it's fairly common, your knees are taking the strain from your new hip.mine went away after a few months.
I have had a 'bakers cyst' as well which went of its own accord.
Only one of the 5 GPs in my surgery actually knew what it was.
Be careful not to overdo the excercises, as we always say on here, listen to your own body,it will tell you when to rest up.
good luck.
thanks Christine, I think you're spot on and it's just a case of building up confidence to what it was. I have not normally struggled with confidence and getting out and about so It's a bit of a new one on me. The thought of attending meetings etc at work and the focus required just seems to have deserted me for now. Im also normally a bit of a plan ahead /ocd ish , in a mild sense, kind of person which also seems to have left the building. I shall make big efforts to return to normality, get out and about, and of course, make lists of things to do... starting tomorrow. Good luck with the rest of your recovery, you sound like you're off to a great first four weeks. x
Paulus, thank you, I thought the cyst was a given that the joint was arthritic. I think I just presumed because it was at the back of my knee, that's where the OA would be. I really hope mine goes too. Either way i wont overdo it pal. Cheers.
I had pain in my thigh and knee before the op and the Consultant said it was caused by my hip. I wasn't sure whether to believe him, thinking oh my God, a knee replacement coming up! However the Consultant was right and now no pain at all in knee or thigh and whereas before my foot was pointing out, probably due to trying to counteract the pain and now it is perfectly straight. Yippee! Take a crutch or stick with you when you go out at first, it gives you some support and helps to build your confidence. Good luck.
Hi Andy I couldn't have done it at 4 weeks, I'm 9 weeks today.
You'll be fine Andy, someone else has posted about anxiety in going out, I think its part of the affect the op has on you.
Don't worry , you'll soon be back to how you used to be.
Sorry Christine, mixed up posts and period after ops. Just shows I'm not ready for the world of work yet. Ha. Thanks for your support, I'm sure I will.
i had pain in both hips and my thighs pre op and I walked like a penguin, now nearly 6 weeks post op and no pain at all, but i have seriously listened to my body and if it said do your exercises and then go for a long walk i did and if it said do your eercises and the slob around doing nothing -I listenrd! i have 2 weeks before i go back to my stressful non sedentary job as a DT teacher in a challenging school so i shall try and build up my stamina and get confident in driving. good luck and remember - onwards and upwards x

I went to my orthopedist because of severe knee pain. Did a bunch of xrays & it turned out it was the hip on that side was bad off and needing replacement. I was very surprised but learned about that strong correlation between hip and knee pain; pain in knee can be referred pain from hip!
I sure hope you have a good recovery!
Valerie, I love that you give yourself permission to slob around. I do too and I do not feel guilty about it. If that is what my body tells me to do.

I was told the cyst was unrelated to OA, which I have had for 20 years.
Mine appeared before my THR.
If memory serves me it went in around 4-8 weeks..my GP thought at first it was a blood clot, before he consulted with his colleagues one of whom knew straight off it was a bakers cyst..so named he said as it used to be thought it was caused by long hours of being on your feet, like bakers in years gone by.
