Just Been Prescribed Citalopram

I've been suffering from depression for almost 2 years now, and my doctor finally decided to put me on medication since I am now 18. The is the first time I am taking any type of medication, and I'm quite wary of the side effects...

Anyways, I've been having the hardest time concentrating on doing essays and other tasks, actually to tell the truth I haven't actually done any work for the past month. I just sit down and I can't do it and it just makes me feel worse. I'm hoping citalopram can help me feel better and get on with my work.

Tomorrow will be my first day taking these pills and I'm positive about it but...if anyone has had any positive experiences with these meds I would appreciate if you shared them with me.

Stick with them, while you may experience short-term side effects the longer term benifits far out-weigh them.

A little background I got diagnosed with severe depression (and anxiety because of it...) last year I've now been on Citalopram since October and the past couple of weeks have honestly been the best I can remember being for well pretty much my whole life. Nothing special has happend, not big bang high or anything I'm just content to forget about the thigs that drag me down and concentrate on the future.

Don't look at these as a magical cure, any anti-depressant will give you enough of a lift to start sorting out your problems/fears and allow you to talk to people without falling apart.

I wouldn't be here if I wasn't put on these meds so from my point of view thats the most positive experience possible, they honestly saved my life and I'm now better than ever, I'm not pretending all's suddenly ok but I'm now able to work out what to do rationally!

Stick with them, just don't expect overnight results it takes between 2 and 4 weeks for most people to see an effect (for me it took about 6 and an upped dose for a real change)

Reluctant1, thank you for you reply. I appreciate it smile

Sound advice. Don't be put off by initial side effects. They will wear off and you will see the benefit. I'm on day 10 of this course; the side effects are nearly over and I'm starting to feel part of the world again. See your GP often so that he/she can advise on dose. Maybe offer something to counter the any start-up problems if they happen. When you're feeling better give some attention to any underlying problems you can identify. It will help if you decide to stop the citalopram. Best of luck and I hope you feel better soon.
