Just been referred to a surgeon for a hiatus hernia operation

I've just been referred by a gastroenterologist to a surgeon for a hiatus hernia operation and I'm so worried after reading many stories online of horrendous pain and problems swallowing post op. I had an endoscopy a week ago and was told the hernia I have is too large to be left. It's a type 3 mixed hernia. Currently I have constant heartburn, shortness of breath and palpitations so I need to get this sorted out but the thought of the operation terrifies me. Can anyone advise me on how long it was before it's possible to eat a normal diet again? Also, I take Metformin for insulin resistance - is it still possible to swallow tablets post op?  Any help would be gratefully received as I'm so nervous.

I would arrange to see your surgeon and have a chat with him/her about your worries so that you have a clear idea on what to expect.  I have heard stories from both sides saying that some have had no issues and others that have felt that they couldn't swallow for a short time.  As for the medication post op I would imagine that they would find a way to be able to give your medication that will be a comfortable way for you and maybe even through a drip for the immediate post op need.

Hi Stephie, I am having a barium swallow done tomorrow and then the gastroenterologist is referring me to a surgeon. I was hopeful for 'magic pills' of some sort but have been told it's gone beyond that. I think I'll try making a list of the questions I need to ask the surgeon as this is scaring me silly. So many people I read about are struggling for months after surgery and my work are already putting me under pressure to give them the exact time I need off. So stressful! Thank you for your advice.

Sadly work can be like that!  All we are to them are bums on seats sadly.  Good luck and let us know how you get on
