Just diagnosed with prostate cancer

Today I got my prostate biopsy report . 3 of 12 cores positive, Gleason 3+3, 40%. 3+3, 8% and 3+4, 54%. My psa is 14.5. Dr. Recommended surgery. Is there anyone with similar numbers that can offer advice?

HI had the robotic surgery 8 weeks ago for me the op was a breeze one night stay in hospital 2 weeks with a catherter 6 weeks with DVT stockings self injected 28 times easy, Now at the point i am nearlly dry, My PSA was 14 Gleason score 3x4 haveing the op was a no brainer for me after meeting the consultant surgeon who does nothing else but prostates boosted my confidence %100, If you go for it have no fear all the best and good luck.

G'day winn16126 and welcome to the world of Prostate Cancer... 1st question - how old are you?

One year on from surgery, was 3 3 pos open surgery the skill of the surgens hand, no regrets clear psa 0.07 which is the lowest reading. 95 % dry, only minor problem during exercise. so  DO IT if the indication are pos and the surgen can do it clean nerv sparing you should be fine,

65 and doing well better OUT than IN, unlike the political EU which is better IN than OUT;  GOOD LUCK

Thanks so much for your reply. I am 56 yrs old. Cancer stage t2c

Thank you... very informative

Thank you... I meet with the surgeon in two weeks.

Have you discussed RT rather than RP...

Yes... However, my urologist seemed to be more pro surgery. I am also going to check into proton treatment.

Hi

Before you have surgery as to see an oncologist first , I had surgery (not very pleasant) and then found out that an oncologist would have waited before going for surgery straight away and that I may not have needed it, surgeons are " men of action ", those are the words of an oncologist, in recent years they have developed other treatments which may be better than surgery.I had surgery 10 years ago and its come back and I'm now having hormone treatment.

Good luck.

Hi winn16126, I am 68 and diagnosed 2nd June and have opted for keyhole surgery which is less invasive (apparently) although I have to lose 3 stone before treatment because I carry excessive a little too much weight particularly around my waist. my Gleason is 7 (3+4) and PSA remains at 8.74 (below 10) MRI scan found 3 small spors although the biopsy 8 of 12 cores isolated and contained to the left hand side lobe of my prostate -  such the powers that be don't seem too anxious in the immediate term and I'm attempting to lose 3 stone before further consideration. As it stands bractotherepy (radio-therapy is an alternative option) - we'll see!!. They seem to take a slightly casual attitude and don't seem unduly concerned. It's when you have an exceptionally high count that they would show concern. You're OK so don't get overly anxious, ask for 'watch & wait' where they monitor any changes on a regularly basis...you'll be OK...

What were you numbers? Psa, Gleason etc? Was yours contained to the prostate? If I can ask... Thanks for sharing.

Good luck with your surgery. As you know, I'm lying awake at night trying to figure this out. Great advise not to rush. I will definitely consider the watch and wait... from w hat I can gather my cancer appears to be slow growing. I will post any info I find and decision I make. Thanks

Hi Winn,

I'm 52. I was Gleason 3 + 3 following a biopsy 2 years ago following a PSA of 5.7 and then 7     --    2 weeks later.

After this my PSA went down to 1.7 and has varied between 1.5 and 2.4 for the 7 subseqent blood tests. In July however it went up to 3.2 and they sent me for an MRI.

Came back small focus of prostate carcinoma contained within the organ which wasn't a great surprise. Saw the Urologist 2 weeks ago who gave the usual options of RT or RP etc... so I had a big decision to make.

I've looked at loads of research, clicnical trials comparing the various treatments to doing nothing (much of the research was suggested by the good people on this site).

I was really worried about what to do etc.. but now I've decided to do  -nowt! Just going to carry on having another PSA test in 3 months and take it from there. I think at my age, with some of the side-effects that appear inevitable, I'm willing to keep rolling the dice although I know at some point I will have to get treated - but not yet!

Did you see the article in the paper last week about a number of patients reporting their surgeon for carrying out what they believe were unnecessary Prostectomies? and treatment when they didn't need it?

Feel great having made the decision as before I couldn't  sleep, was worried, and yes frightened. But not now.

all the best

Thanks Sam... what paper did the article appear in? I would love to read it. I am going to slow down for now and keep researching. was there any intervention that cause your PSA to drop to 1.7 ?

Hi Winn,

I'll try and find the article - it was in one of the daily's. There's loads of info about over treatment on the net such as :-

http://edition.cnn.com/2014/07/18/health/prostate-cancer-overtreament/

I think my own PSA dropped possibly because I had an infection of some sort at the time. If I'd have had the test a month later then nothing would have been amiss!

Wow.Would have saved you a lot of anxiety... My urologist just walked in and said you have cancer, these are your options, radiotherapy or surgery, bye. Almost like it's an assembly line...

Just an FYI....a friend of mine got thru this and beat it...you can too.

Hang in there.....and do your treatments...prayers and luck to you.

The "cancer" word is such a terrifying word.

That's very encouraging! Thank you so much.

Yes, he never told anyone at work about it because he didn't want to TALK about it all the time...think about it during work....he had his treatments...which I honestly don't know what they were....but his numbers were pretty high...after surgery and about 3 months out of work...

He is back to normal!  He is a GOOD friend of mine....and he specifically didn't tell me till it was over...because I would have been worried and questioning him about it ALL the time...that's just how I am.

After I found out...I was SO HAPPY he beat it...and you can too...sometimes just KNOWING it can be done...helps people to fight!  That is why I told you smile.

You GOT THIS.
