Hi all, I have just found this forum. I was researching orlistat and it's effects as I am planning to discuss it with my GP next week. I have been overweight for so long now it is hard to know where to start!! I am 15 stone, and about 4 years ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease and as a result take thyroxine daily. I had noticed my weight creeeping up but was happily newly wed and thought I was ok. When I tried to lose the weight after baby number one it was impossible and this is when I was diagnosed. I thought that once my thyroid levels were ok I would be able to lose weight naturally...how wrong I was! Here I am 4 years later and desperate!! It rules my daily thoughts and no matter what I do, which diets I follow I do not lose more than a pound or two, which are instantly replaced as soon as I have a weekend away! I am so frustrated and have been reading some of the lovely comments on here I already feel spurred on to get losing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!! I am a bit apprehensive about the tablets as nothing else has ever worked, but I am willing to give it a try!!!
HI Gingerjo
I have had an under active thyroid since 1998 and since having my third child in Jan 2006 it has been difficult for me too, I had stopped smoking in 2005 so the weight gain started from then and then I got pregnant and since having mobility problems I have gained weight...... I was thankfully put on Orlistat and I have almost gone down two dress sizes, I had since changed doctors surgeries and I explained they had stopped working as I had been on them for three months so she said they would try something else, after I have sorted other health issues out first...... I am so pleased with these as to be honest I used to look pregnant and when my mum took me shopping for some clothes for xmas I could buy medium instead of large or extra large, and I can fit into a 16 instead of a 18 or 20  So these tablets can work but You may have to cut more calories I think after they stop working?????? as they take 30% of even stored fat I think?
Good luck x
Hi,
I would grab them with two hands if you are offered them :!:  - I was in the same boat as you in that anything I did was not helping me loose weight and at 5ft 2\" and 15 1/2 stone you can imagine how I looked :!:  - but I've been on them since end of May and now weigh 14 stone and gone down a dress size also. :D
I've not probably stuck to the regime properly and have had the odd cheat  but to my cost of being on the loo and feeling really bloated  - but that goes away eventually and then you get back on the train and start all over again - we are human after all and no one is perfect.
If you do start them make sure you drink plenty of water as you can get headaches but if you have plenty of fluid that helps and look at the labels on food packaging - nothing over 5gm of fat per 100gm - stick to 10-15gms of fat per meal and eat enough fat as if you don't they don't work as well if you don't.
Hope this helps and you get prescribed them.
Regards
Jane
