had op weds late afteroon and was discharged today at 10 however, so upset as i cant manage the stairs and in so much pain i was very washed out and zero
energy and then just now at 19.00 i felt i had more energy but i could only manage 3
stairs is this normal ?
It’s major surgery, and everyone recovers differently. One thing they advised me: get ahead of your pain; don’t let it get so bad you can’t get up and walk. Are you doing any PT exercises while you’re in bed? It’s important to get your muscles going, but not so much you’re in agony. I assume you’re going up stairs because you have to, not just for fun. Going up is the hardest, so don’t feel too badly about that.
they’re not meant to let you go until youve managed the stairs! you need to keep moving i had both done at same time so no ‘good leg’ to start on how old are you if you dont mind me asking
I did the stairs at the hospital but cant get down them im 47 years old.
Hi Gail,
Are you walking good leg bad leg, this is how I walked before op and after. You should not have any difficulty walking upstairs like that. Maybe the fatigue is from the drugs you have had during op.
awww you poor thing i found down easier do you put crutch down first ? x
Hi, I’m 47 and had THR in July. Recovery was slow and painful (more painful than I thought it would be) I wasn’t sleeping cos of pain and my doc prescribed me liquid morphine which was a blessing! Mobility was difficult but by taking my time and not rushing recovery and doing the exercises, 4 months later I am a completely different person. Pain free and feeling so much better. I honestly didn’t think I would recover as well as I did.
Take you time and don’t over think anything.

Hi Gail,
What you are experiencing is normal. I have had several hip replacements over 38 years. The last revision only this month even major rebuilding of the pelvic bone. You feel well at hospital as the wound is full of anesthetic and you come home and every thing is a little harder and you can literally hit the wall. The first few days can be a roller coaster but then you will start to notice every day is little better and less pain. Keep the medication up even if its only panadol. It’s hard being patient, but you should feel better tomorrow. Please don’t over do it. Trust this helps.
thank you all i am very tired and with the cocktail of drugs its fatigue will try again today tks for all your answers
Hiya ![]()
How’s things going today?
Hopefully your starting to feel a little better as each day passes, It’s still very early days, I was in for my THR on 5th Oct, and I remember 48hrs after the Op I was not in a good place, I know it’s been said over and over again, but take one day at time. Keep the exercises going and walk as best ya can…

Did the hospital check you could climb stairs? I was given crutches and some steps and had to climb them! We were not allowed home until we had passed along with some other exercises they checked us on. Having said that I am pretty rubbish at steps and using crutches if it comes to that.
Yes it is.
physio did stairs with me however i think that made my knee swollen . im ok pottering upstairs at the mo
HI, thank you for asking. im learning to listen to my body and do only
what i can. Pain is less just a swollen knee on operated side , as you say every day different .
thank you
It does help with building up muscles, but take it easy.
