Hi , I had my 1st acute pancreatic attack 2 yrs ago because I was a a heavy drinker. Now 2 years sober and eating healthy I've just been discharged from hospital today after a flare up that hospitalised me for 4 days. I have been ill from the 1st attack and now I have lost 4 stone in weight in a year. This disease is hell. Any advice on diet ect would be much appreciated. Also have GERD and IBS so very restricted food wise.
Sorry to hear you’re going through this John. I as well had my first attack due to drinking. I was in a coma for two weeks and spent a month in the hospital. Surprisingly I was ok after that till I relapsed. I drank a few times over a weeks time and ended up in the hospital for two weeks. It’s now been a year and a half since I had a drink but the attacks kept coming. I’ve been hospitalized for a minimum of 5 days each month for the past year or so. It’s relentless. So yes you can still have flare ups even if you’re doing everything right. Good luck and hang in there!
Thanks for the reply kathy. I have been basically not very well from the 1st attack and my quality of life has decreased so much. I haven't had a drink in 2yrs now and eat as healthy as I can afford. Talk about a life changing illness lol. Whats freaking me out is that I have lost 4 stone in weight in a year after doing everything right. My energy levels are shot and I have constant pain in my lower back and bowl as well. You sound as if you are at your wits end with this condition too. I really need to do more research into my diet and such. Also I'm waiting on a Mri scan as a out patient as my bile duct was dilated and the doc seems to think It may have been some really small stones that caused this attack. The price we pay for being party animals in our youth eh!. Freaking out a little because of the weight loss and lack of energy and pain , but I hope it settles down. I feel the same as you do! I have a narrowed bile duct as well. They put a stent in it and changed the stent every two months for close to a year. Didn’t help much. I have met with a surgeon. He said I would be a perfect person for a total pancreatectomy if it wasn’t for the alcohol use before. It damages islet cells that are needed to make insulin so he will not do the surgery on me. I too have lost close to 40 pounds. I’m just skin and bones now. I can’t work. Yeah it can be an awful thing to have!! Today the pain is so outrageous I may have to go to the hospital. If you find out anything in your journey that helps let me know
Sorry to hear that Kathy and for the late reply. I hope you get things sorted soon. Had my Mri the other day and now I gotta wait 21 days for the results!. Picked up a infection when I was in hospital too lol. The pancreatitis has calmed down , but this infection is kicking my head in. Either that or it's the combo of that and the amount of antibiotics I have to take atm. Have you tried Cbd oil or Medical Cannabis?. Both help really well with pain and especially sleep. Take care and hang on in there.
Oh jeez I hope you get rid of the infection soon!! I haven’t tried the CBD or medical marijuana yet. It just became available in my state so I will try it soon
