Just want to compare progress

at exactly this time last week I was going down for total right hip. I have today been out for a walk by the river using one stick, and taken the dog for a walk. My biggest problem is sleeping at night. I was not expecting so much pain in my buttock which makes sitting on chair or in bed quite painful. Still taking meds, but not quite so many!  Just wanted to find out how quickly other people recovered. I am 60 yrs old

If you are doing all that after only a week and you are doing all that walking.and getting pain then to me the pain is your body telling you you are over doing it.

You need to take it easy. As for the trouble sleeping everyone gets that. It is better to try and sleep as long as you can at night and have naps during the day. If you are having pain and you have reduced your meds you need to up them agasin too. You don't have to be a hero thinking you will get over this in a few days. This op just doe not work like that. If you do too much it will come back and bite you big time. So just take it slowly when you get past 6 maybe 10 weeks then go for it. But you need to heal to be honest and that is what your ba=iody is trying to do. You may cause yourself more issues down the line pushing yourself like that.

hi carol

I think you are doing an awful lot for 1 week on.  That was the week I tried to rest as was still swollen from the operation.  I also took painkllers up to 2nd week. I am 3 1/2 weeks on now and can walk about mile and half but was told to use 2 crutches for long walk (even though I get around with 1). I have been given exercises for operated leg to strengthen it as they recommended to me not to do long walk on 1 crutch until operated leg strong enough to ensure no limping.

You may be in pain as maybe a bit early to be walking so far.  As the physio keeps telling me your body will tell you to stop.  sounds like you are doing well.

Hi, it would be helpful if you said which procedure you had as posterior has a long healing process and superpath can see people driving after a week. It also depends if your hip is cemented or nor as well as whether you can fully, partially or non weight bear.

All these things make a difference to how quick one is walking unaided and has no restrictions.

Many thanks.x

Hi Carol

quicker than me - I'm 3 weeks today and walking well around 2 miles daily but very slowly. I'm very tired though. I use 2 crutches when out - not because I need them both but was told it was better as it would ensure I walk straight and without a limp. Just use 1 or sometimes none in the house though. I certainly wasn't able to only have 1 after a week though and I'm only a year older than you so well done you're doing really well!

Hi Carol

I am  2 weeks and one day post op. Night times are the worst for me and still getting very little sleep due to pain in lower back and operated leg. It's a hot nagging, nervy , sometimes twitchy sort of pain which is relieved by getting up and having a walk round. When I went to get dressing removed today, the nurse said the pain is caused by nerves being cut through during operation. I am 63 - I think the pain we are experiencing is pretty normal

sti. Taking painkillers but during day feel pretty good and mobile

Doing more each day

Kind regards Linda💞💞

Oh my goodness your a star! Though the pain seems to scream overdoing it ! Mind you a week after my THR I was just being released from hospital, certainly couldn't do what your doing and I'm 44!!!! So good on you, but watch that pain, it's telling you something.

Thank you for your reply

thanks Maggie

its really nice to compare notes, I don't think that enough information is given to immediately post op.

thanks Rosie

i am definitely walking slowly! It seems sensible to use two crutches when out, I have to try and remember the walking straight as my foot Is so used to walking pointing sideways.

I didn't expect so much pain in the buttock, sitting on the toilet is one of the worst things.!

sounds like you are doing really well

Hi Linda

i dread night time, don't sleep very well at the best of times. I will be putting on weight though, last night I got up and ate crackers and Two Bakewell tarts!

Interesting what you say about the twitchy pain. I feel like an electric shock going through leg making it twitch.

Sounds like you are doing well, thanks for your reply

thanks Juilet

Hi Carol

Sorry if I came ove a bit nasty or too negative. I am not sure what is going on with the forum but 1/2 of my post saying hi and explaning a little nicer are missing.  I hope you didn't take my post in the wrong way. If you did I am really sorry.

The only other thing I meant to mention is leg length. My operated leg was longer before the op. Consultant said he would try and make them even. Post op I still have a longer leg and have to wear a shoe on the good side to raise me up enough to do a couple of the exercises. Anyone else have length issues?

Thanks Haliea

appreciate your comments. Sleeping on my back is extra difficult as I suffer with sensitivity at the back of my skull and cannot put the back of my head on a pillow so have to scrunc pillow  and keep head turned. I also suffer burning heels, so sleep with my feet just over the end of the bed.

Hi Carol,  like the fellow hippies said : you are doing remarkably well ... you will probably feel all kinds of different muscle groups coming out for attention during your recovery ... have yowatched the THR surgery on you tube? If you are up to it, perhaps you can have a look at that - after I watched what this surgery actually is about, I have a better understanding of how much healing is needed ...and how awesome the body is in its ability to heal and repair what was done ..

do you have a raised toilet seat ? be gentle with your self abd come back here if you have any questions or concerns ... warm hug

I had posterior procedure

Hi Carol

Yes, my daughter in law sent me a magazine and a rock cake last night so guess what I was doing middle of the night - yes, eating the rock cake!

Heh, we can afford to spoil ourselves a little

You have a good night!

Kind wishes Linda xx

It does sound like you are doing a lot really quickly. I wasn't going out for walks till about week 3 and then with crutches and only short walks. I didn't move on to a stick until at least week 5. I'm 62.
