Keeping a recovery diary has helped me

Morning all

Just a thought for those coming up to the op:  one thing that I've found really useful in helping me to see progress (and to look back at and realise how far I`'ve come in a reltively short space of time) is to keep a day-by-day diary of what's happened/what I've done - eg walks / exercises - and when I've been to the physio etc.  Nothing huge but just enough to remind me "wow, was it 3 wks ago that I was struggling with stairs" etc.

Hope this might work for you too.

All the best

Neil

Hi Neil,

Good advice - Unfortunately i didn't do it ... I am big on writing in my journal but for some reason this seemed to be too overwhelming --- I do regret it though - it is so true ... we forget how well we have done, how far we have come and only remember the challenging things ....

thank you so much

warm hug

renee

Great advice. Have had FOUR and this never occurred to me. If I ever have a fifth, will certainly do it 😁

It's so easy to forget isn't it? My clips come out today so looking forward to moving more freely, funnily my'good' leg seems to have constant cramp today!  Enjoying minor achievements like 'walking' downstairs!

Hi Neil,

What a great idea. I have noticed today how much better my walking is with a stick in comparision to 2 days ago. How we soon forget the little things. Definitely going to do this and as I am sat bored doing nothing. Now is a good time.

I did this Neil and it does help! I remember so well the milestone of taking the loo risers off my toilets haha!

What a great idea neil. Too late for me. This will help others so much.

Hi Neil,

excellent idea, and like others wish I'd thought of it myself too.

One thing I do tho, is that I like hanging around for 6 months or so on this site, and as queries come in I can remember pretty well how I was, and how much ground I've made up.

bestest,

Mic

Another hoop jumped through.  Thirty clips removed today, day 9!  Feeling easier but trip to hospital was exhausting, onward and upward.

I am at week 8 post op think I will start keeping one....having such a lousey day today...

Thanks for the tip

That's a great idea....good to reflect back too when having not so good a day.

👍

I also started a personal hip, recovery blog on my Facebook page called "Thinking Out Loud " it was really an eye opener going back to my first weeks ans months of challenges during my recovery

Hi Neil,

thats a great idea, I've been giving myself goals everyday, my biggest yet was getting don to see my horse, five minute walk that took ten! Fourteen days post hip with ups and downs like the rest of us it seems, took the toilet riser off yesterday, it felt so unstable but what works at home, doesn't work at Tesco.....how hard would it be to put a supportive bar in most toilets?learning to walk is I there sting, taking small definite steps instead of shuffling, putting a pedometer on my smart phone to chart my progress.  Very bad at sitting in the car for any length of time.  Right hip feels as though the skin is being stretched at the bottom of my scar. I'm so grateful the sun is shining. Funny though, all those sitting down jobs, like finishing my sewing, doing my accounts etc just are not getting done.

We all seem to be progressing at our own pace though, off to work for a very short time, with some supportive people tomorrow.

Yours, Susan

Good stuff Susan!  It's the small triumphs that help us move forward ....

I'm nearly 6 weeks now - 10 days ago, tried standing on one leg (=operated leg) and YES I can do this!  I never could have done this a year ago.

Yesterday I got on my bike (indoors on an exercise bike stand that somone had lent me) for the first time.

As you say learning to walk all over again is the main thing though and I still get great satisfaction just standing up and walking and thinking wow, it  doesn't hurt to do that!

Hi All,

lovely idea, tho get vivid flash backs on hearing others stories!

Ian -how lonf can you stand on one leg for/ and can do do circles then with the other foot?

Bye all

Hi Mic I gues you mean me

Well I find I can stand on it as long as I want to!  And yes have just tried doing circles with the other!  Easy peasy
