I saw anephrologist on Tuesday after my dermo found blood and protein in my urine back in Janaury. He immediately took me off the fumaderm I have been on for my psoriasis but told me that my kidney function was only 50%. I am very worried because I think this comes from a urine test done on 9th January and I have been on the high dose Fumaderm for 9 weeks since then. I am very worried my renal function has fallen further. I am 77. Has anyone of a similar age been on drugs that affect the kidney and has renal function improved once they come of those drugs? I have go to back in 6 weeks UNLESS my blood and urine test results taken Tuesday are bad. I a m very tired and have some pains in my shoulders. Also can renal function be picked up in blood tests? I have been having regular blood tests and been told everything is normal. I do realise that the kidneys can cope even on 25% and below but still worried this might progress to renal failure.....am I worrying for nothing?
Hi. My sister was on Bactrim antibiotic, and her kidney numbers were bad also. Saw Kidney dr. She wants her to have her kidney bloodwork and urinalysis redone, since she is off of them. Yes, Medications can affect your bloodwork. Hoping her numbers are better. She is very tired also. Just hope it is better for you also. Keep us updated. Good Luck. Prayers. You will be ok. Just have to stay off certain meds. She told her not to take Ibruprofen, or alleve. Just Tylenol if she absolutely needs it. Those drugs affect the kidneys also..

Don't panic. I did until I found this site. Talk to your G.P. about your anxieties. I have been told that the kidneys deteriorate about 1% per year with age under normal conditions.
Because it is known that our health often deteriorates as we get older, most surgeries do yearly blood tests for liver and kidney function for over 60's. Ask if your G.P. does this.
There are many reasons why kidney function can diminish so ask whether one can be identified for you. Many medicines can contribute to (not cause) kidney problems. Many ilnessses/conditions can also contribute e.g. diabetes,urine tract infections (like cyctitis).
Until your reach 30% function, it is likely that your blood results will read "abnormal, no action". After that, all that happens is that you will be monitored more closely until intervention is needed (dialysis) when function drops to around 12%. Sometimes it may be appropriate to do a kidney scan or biopsy - but that depends on other factors/symptoms
With luck, you will be in your 90's before any of the above apply to you. I am 75 and now on dialysis. Still O.K.

always remember eGFR is only an estimation, it is not accurate fact, and at 77 years old a healthy 77 year old would have approx 63% function, so you're not in a drastic situation. yes renal function can be picked up in blood tests, but it is only an estimate, not an actuality. i think you are worrying over nothing, just follow your doctor's advice.
