I've had knee replacements, now I'm having hip and really nervous, anyone have both? So scared...
I haven't had knee surgery but did have THR in January.
I was a little nervous but all went well with the surgery. Recovery took awhile.. step by step... Was amazing to no longer have hip pain after years of it.
Yes I had a knee replacement 6 years ago then my hip 1 and a half years ago . Both on the left side. I was very nervous too. Not going to use the word easier but hip was better than knee. I seems to tolerate hip better than knee which my Dr said I would. Restrictions were what I had to worry about was on them for 2 months but every Dr is different . I put things up on counter tops and hung a cloth shoe holder on my bedroom window and put toilettres in so they were easy to get to .
I have. Hip replacement was a piece of cake compared to the nice. And within a week you won't believe what you've been doing I live on the third floor and I was in the hospital a few days and then rehab for a week and I walked up and download three flights of stairs with cane and no pain I don't think after the second week I took pain meds. Best of luck
Sweats and loose fitting clothes work best. Do your exercises boxers are better so underwear doesn't rub incision. The hospital gave me a thing to put socks on and it worked great. They also gave me a grapper and a sponge on a long stick for in the shower. You will do great. Reach out anytime
Hello Zak-
I have a friend who had both knees and both hips [and a shoulder!!] replaced and she's doing very well. You'd never know she'd had any replacement surgery. I'm due for surgery in late Spring/Early Summer. I've come to the conclusion fear is just a natural aspect of the process. Find a good experienced surgeon you trust, ask a lot of questions and be a physically prepared as you can be before the operation. Best wishes.
Jim
I had both knees done, 2005 then 2006. Had hip done posterior June 2017. Much less pain on recovery for hip. Physical therapy for knees much more painful. I was very careful to follow restrictions as I did not want to dislocate. I'm retired so was able to recover slowly. Good luck.
Your hospital were very generous I had to buy anything I needed. They didn’t offer a grabber till the last day. If I had had it earlier would have been useful!
Hi I had a left knee total replacement in September last year and am going to have my hip done in June and yes I'm quite nervous but have been told that hip replacement is easier recovery than knee ...it's the restrictions that will frustrate me I'm sure, especially sleeping
Hi Zak,
As you have had knee surgery you know that the surgery is not a problem. I was very scared as I was a complete virgin to hospitals therefore pleasantly surprised I knew nothing about the surgery. I have had zero pain was out of hospital on 2nd day and only took paracetamol as a precaution, then thought it was silly taking them as no pain came. The 3 months precautions are a bit difficult especially sleeping on the back but my legs are the same length for the first time in years, no penguin walking. 3 weeks post op on Wednesday counting down the days to stopping the fragmin (blood thinner) 4 weeks of that. I think as the weeks pass and you get stronger you can feel the benefits. Do as you are told, as the guys on here will tell you, once the recovery is under way how much better you will feel. Good luck.
Have had both. Hip is totally easier
Hi catt1, I had to buy everything too. In fact the hospital actually sold grabbers, sponges and a load of other things, but Amazon was a lot cheaper and a lot better! At least you got a free grabber even though it was a bit late.
I am amazed you had to buy things to aid your recovery. I was asked what I needed. I have a chair, frame around the toilet, grabber, sock aid and long handled shoe horn wished I had asked for a bed tray on wheels that would of helped. What aera are you in.
I had a sort of bit of material to help me lift my leg into bed and I did have toilet seats, so I was not given nothing! Everything else I had to buy myself.
Hip way easier than the knee! I’m 10 weeks post tkr and not as far “on” as I was with hip, the only thing with hip is it is more disabling at first as in not being able to bend or even just lean forward etc but after 6 weeks your off...
I have a female friend, 76 yrs, who just had her left hip replaced a couple of months ago. Last year she had her left shoulder, and before that right should and right knee. Before that, quadrupal (sp?) heart op. Miraculous operations on a woman with Rheumatoid arthritis.. Just make sure you have a good surgeon, lots of experience. I, by the way, had one knee successfully replaced last year.
