have osteoarthritis in knee BUT I ALSO have fallen four times as its just given way when walking and is now locked. Have had xrays and its not broken...and the GP is simply assuming its due to arthrirts but its SO painful....should I just wait and see if it unlocks or ask him to help me find a solution to this agonising pain?
So sorry to hear you are in such pain. you should really ask your GP for a referral. There comes a.time when the osteoporosis arthritic pain becomes unbearable and surgery is the only answer. Yes.a tkr is major surgery but I can honestly say that I'm delighted with the result. I had my surgery 6 months ago and am now pain free. Good luck to you.
oh you're so knid answering so fast, thank you ....hadn't got as far as thinking about replacement but........!!!!!
I have hydrotherapy tomorrow and intend to ask the physio what she thinks, as I am sure I have something IN my knee that has broken off something else, it just doesn't feel like this is down to the arthritis (I have Rheumatoid A as well so am familiar with THAT pain!!!) I'm aklso waiting for pretty major back surgery and have no idea where to turn next, its all pretty scary so again, thank you for replying. X
You say it has given way.....very similar to a partial patella dislocation which spontaneously resolves. Once this occurs, sometimes it continues to reoccur long-term. Speak with your doctor and describe the "knees buckling/knees giving way" feeling.
My patella recently partially dislocated and spontaneously resolved itself. The following 10 days, my knee was very painful.
Go back to specialist if it's locked you need sorting
ok thanks...would that pain go on for some weeks though? its three now since I first fell over (and I wasn't drunk!!!lol) , sort of hoped it would get better sooner than this? Thanks for responding so quickly, very helpful, much appreciated
I LOVE it...".I need sorting"...made me chuckle, thank you so much...will see physio and get her on board tomorrow, I think when I first fell I ought to have gone to hospital straight away as it locked then ansd I was YELLING with pain, but of course I can't go to A and E now as its been too long!! Back to GP then....thank you x
You have underlying problems so it could very well do so. Mine dislocated as i was about sit....very random.
Let me explain where the pain may be originating from. The femur (thigh bone) and the tibia are joint together via cartilage and ligaments. You have your patella (kneecap) offering as a protection to this joint. The patella is held in place by ligaments. Once you have dislocated your patella, these ligaments become weak and loose, they do not hold the patella in place, therefore it is prone to dislocating again.
Try sitting up on a flat surface or bed and straighten your leg and attempt to lift it (without bending) for 3 seconds, is this painful?
did you hear the scream? lol
I tried that....but can't get it off the bed, nor can I bear to straighten the knee, in fact it won't..... I'm already on slow release morphine for back pain so I hoped it would enable me to relax and to do so, but no luck there. . Its even waking me at night if I move (and who doesn't wriggle in their sleep a bit eh?lol) I thought it would feel "wobbly" if dislocated but this knee is just not moving at all, and I am still trying to take my dogs out daily....this is just SO not-funny now as you can imagine, but thank you for the information and help tho, really kind of you.
Good let me know how it goes
will do...thank you SO much, nice to know there's someone "out there"!!!! x
Ouch, no, i felt that. You need immediate attention ASAP. Honestly, for us knee-jerkers (see what i did?
) exercise is hard to get right. I've learnt regular stretching and specific knee exercises go a long way. Overall exercises aren't much help.
HAHAHAHA!!! wish my knee WOULD jerk!!!! Just once would do!!!! As I said, its hydro tomorrow so I'm going to have a very serious discussion with my lady and see what she REALLY thinks....initially the hydro was to help the stiff ugly lumpy joints from the R.A but things have changed somewhat....and I'm still crippled!!!!
Off to bed now, got to drive there early a.m so I can get parked as close as I can and then a stagger to the pool....listen for the splash!!! Bye for now, more another time, and THANKS AGAIN x
Sorry to hear about all the pain and the locked knee, it's a difficult way to live. I struggled along with my bad knees for 9 years, knowing that replacement was the next thing I could do. After a weekend vacay I really overdid the walking and one knee locked up. I was left walking with a limp. I managed that for a few months, but it really starting bothering my hip and back. I decided it was time to get serious about the replacement and visited with several different orthopedics. Exactly 5 months after it locked up I was in the hospital having them both replaced. Today's been a really good day and as I was walking up some steps I thought about how good I felt. It was worth it. It's almost exactly 5 months after the surgery and it's been filled with challenges and successes. I'm not 100% yet, but I'm way better off than I was a year ago.
So, that's my story, we all have different paths we've walked. My personal opinion is to see a specialist. Figure out what you are willing to live with and for how long. Osteoarthritus will never repair itself, the damage is done. How I managed bone-on-bone as long as I did amazes me. Praying these new knees last as long as I do. Keep us posted on what happens.
Clara, when you say "I have something in my knee that has broken off", I'm wondering if it's a bone spur. That was part of my problem. Of course, that doesn't mean it is your issue, but it sounds similar. When I would grocery shop, no matter how little I was buying, I always grabbed a cart on wheels, because my knee would go out, with no warning. From what I remember, the doctor said that was a result of the bone spur getting in the way of the knee...or something like that (sorry, it was 10 years ago that I had that conversation and can't remember the details exactly).
Sorry to hear about the major back surgery in the near future. Don't let it all overwhelm you. One thing at a time...you will be like the bionic woman. ![]()
BIONIC?????? ME??????hmmmm I think I have a LONG way to go before I manage that but am willing to try anything now!! Actually I am as petrified about the knee as I am about the back which at the moment seems to involve 5-7 houirs of surgery...and lots of physio afterwards. Oh well, no pain no gain, and I AM prepared to put 100% into my recovery, no point in them doing anything if I don't do something too, is there? I'm at the "oh where's the nearest trolley to grab?"...and even sometimes "nope, I can't face shopping at all today!" stage....mostly the not today option I'm afraid but things WILL get better....I hope!
Thank you all for your support, means a lot xx
All the best!
II tried hydrotherapy but i always felt so sore afterwards so i just stopped going.
Take care and stay welll :-)
Yes - I have been again to day - swollen afterwards as overdo it without realising it and up to 48 hours but then really beneficial especially in stretching the scar tissue - only about 3 or 4 sessions needed though to push things just a bit more than would be able to do on land. Its not essential but for some it is an added bonus.
