Knee problem

Hi just after some advice really I fell and landed on my knee 10 weeks ago while playing netball. My knee is still locked and I cannot straighten it it is also still swollen I had an MRI 5 weeks ago which showed a sprain on my mcl I have been having physio and she is not happy with my progress as it's still very painful and I have very limited moment and swelling no matter how hard I try to straighten my knee it feels as though something is stopping it and my knee just feels heavy all the time. Does anyone have any ideas or any exercises I should try

Are you icing good after therapy and anytime to exert any pressure on the knee. This helps wish swelling and blood flow. Try an over the counter anti iinflammatory. I use Aleve twice a day. Massage may also give you relief

Hi Kerry

I can't offer any advice except I really think you should be referred now to an Orthopaedics surgeon, if you haven't already seen one.

My niece damaged a knee ligament playing football & the orthopods put her on a cricket brace for 8 weeks, then she had to have physiotherapy.

She's ok now, back to playing football, @ getting married in the summer!!

Other than that go with OFG's advice, he's been there, got the t - shirt & read the book. As we say over here. The man knows what he's talking about. Also if you get any replies from Chico Marx, another man who knows.

Good luck

Thanks for replying I am icing on a regular basis and taking regular anti inflammatory nothing seems to be working even my physio is baffled and wants to get a second opinion because all my symptoms are showing a meniscal tear unfortunately my gp in the uk is no help at all and I'm having to pay physio privately just not sure how long I can keep going

Hi I've not been referred to anyone my gp in the U.K. Thinks this is normal and will take 6-12 months I am paying for private physio at the moment it's so frustrating think I may have to go back to gp and refuse to move unless they do something

Kerry, I absolutely agree with the other advice on here - ten weeks is a long time for this to be going on and I would be asking for a referral to a specialist. If your normal GP won't refer you, could you see someone else at the same practice to ask for a referral?  Maybe you need to get a bit pushy with them.  Difficult, I know.

I totally agree with Chris, you need to get pushy with the GP or see a more sympathetic GP at your surgery.

Please don't put it off, I had a similar experience with a locum GP & had 2 extra years of pain, when it could have been dealt with in the 1st instance.

If only we were in USA. Unfortunately nowadays we have to fight for treatment on the NHS.

Good luck

I'm still no further foward with my recovery dr says it's not a meniscal teAr but doesn't know why I still have the swelling or why I can't fully straighten my leg so have no idea what's going on my physio wonders if it's nerve damage has anyone else experienced this

Are you seeing an orthopod? If it's GP saying this, ask for urgent referral to Orthopaedics & Trauma, you need assessment by an Orthopod.

Take care

I'm so frustrated stil no answers the only thing I do know is that there is no improvement still can't straighten my leg it's becoming very uncomfortable now when I'm walking whenever I put my foot on the ground pain feels as though it's in my kneecap which is a new thing

Has your GP still not referred you to the orthopods? Can you see a more sympathetic GP at your practice & get them onside?

All this is taking its toll on you! I'm afraid you really have to be firm with the doctors nowadays!

Some practices really don't like to refer unless absolutely, life threateningly, necessary! Luckily mine aren't like that (apart from the locum years ago!!!).

I hope they listen to you & do something soon.

Sorry have been incommunicado due to Virgin email having a problem!!

Hi,

I had TKR 6/2016 and have had the same problem, locking and not able to straighten it, 4 times now. Doctor where I had it done said the prosthesis has a plastic pin which, for some reason, it jumped and prevents straightening of the leg. I got it back by dangling my leg off the side of a table and gently massaging and swinging it back and forth as far as I could. I'm hoping they can just build up the neopreme (sp?) to prevent it from happening so much.

Wish you luck!

Totally agree with Marilyn. You will have to push for a referral assertively but not aggressively. I would go from the quality of life and pain aspect. List the things it makes difficult in your work and leisure and read out. State that you are unhappy with progress and you want to be referred to an Orthopaedic Specialist as you cannot go on like this. If they won't refer ask to see another GP.

You are also entitled to 6 physio sessions on the NHS but I know in some areas there is a long weight. I too have had to pay privately it's not right.

All the best, Jan x

I think the biggest thing to push is that it's keeping you awake at night.  This seems to be the biggest box to tick to get referred!  And that medication doesn't help with this aspect (and I've never found it did!).

Thanks everyone I finally have been referred to an orthopaedic occ health wrote a letter to my gp and asked them to do it only bonus working in the NHS I suppose although it's only taken 13 weeks will let you know how I get on

Good!  Do let us know how you get on!  Hope it goes well!

Isn't it awful that you have to push like that just to get anything done! It is not right! What does quality of life count for now??

So glad you're being referred at last.

Take care.

Got my appointment on Thursday I'm so thankful for that I feel like I'm going mad still can't straighten knee or do any physical excerise I'm hoping I get some answers and not just more physio

Good to hear Kerry!  I hope they can tell you what's wrong and then put it right.  Keep us updated, won't you.

Well back from my appointment with an orthopaedic consultant and finally going to get some answers booked in for an arthroscopy he basically thought the same as me and on further inspection of my mri scan 12 weeks there is some damage to my meniscus which has more than likely got worse since scan at last someone has listened and agreed with me. Thanks everyone on here for your support and encouragement to keep complaining
