Hi Tom, good to hear you managed to get a few hours sleep. I never take tablets usually either and stupidly tried to cut down on the painkillers when I came out of hospital, I was in for 3 days, I don't know how they managed to discharge you after 16 hours, they had me on total bed rest for the first 24 hours, I guess different countries have different ideas, anyway I have learned the hard way and also following the advice from everyone on here I am now taking them regularly, I think you can cope so much better if you're not in pain, so I would say in the first couple of weeks you should take them as prescribed. Take care and look after yourself. Many thanks for your support., it is really appreciated.
Thank you thank you. Most people I talk to are also shocked I was home that fast, I can't not tell you how thankful I am for your words of encouragement and support. Please take care of your self and I hope to continue to hear from you.
Tom
Hi Tom I learned the hard was also in regards to pain. I don't no if I was afraid of becoming addicted or the fact that if I took them they way they say too I would run out. probably both. Once I did start taking them on a schedule things were better. I don't no if I was ever completely out of pain but I managed through it. And as for the nights. Augh! Why does the pain always get worse at night. Come 7 pm it would start. But not sure how I got through the worst of it. Now pain is mostly managible. Still aches at night. And if I over did it during the day. I gave up trying to figure that one out! The over doing. We're you given exercises to do at home? Many have given me suggestions on here and I'm sure they are part of the reasons I'm am finally in a better place. Take care
Thank you for taking the time to send your response. What you say is so true. I am now afraid I will run out of meds before pain goes away. I am getting so depressed with the lack of improvement the pain the swelling the stiffness. Everyone says it takes time to take it easy. If I take it easy it really gets tight and stiff then the pain, if I excerise its painful
Then you are chasing pain, meds take a while to kick in, then they really don't last . Sorry I am rambling I need a better place
Struggling a bit today, it seems a bit more swollen and stiff than yesterday so I am guessing I overdone it yesterday, although I hadn't thought I had, it feels like,I take 1 step forward and 2 back, I've done my exercises today and rested up on the sofa with ice pretty much all day today. I don't know how it works in the Us but I just rang my doctor for another prescription when I started running low on my painkillers and it wasn't a problem.
You need to take your meds about a hr before you exercise. And ice afterwards. Ice it and elevate often through out the day. A week after I had my tkr my mom who was my best friend passed away. I was devastated. And went into this depression. It was awful. I cried so much. That is when I found this. Every one on here will tell you depression is all part of it. We have all gone from being totally independent to this.
Most doctors over here don't like to prescribed extra pain meds. And yes it feels like one step forward and three back. Done my home exercise today and still stiff and painful. So ice and rest and sitting on sofa leg in the air but the tightness is getting me very worried. I am wearing my compression stocking aging maybe hoping this may help. Really hate this feeling. Sorry I am rambling on and on
Don't worry that's what this forum is all about, I will no doubt be rambling on again when I can't sleep tonight!!
Your only 8 days in. U have a way to go depending on your body type. Everyone heals differently. I can only say,... Ask ask ask questions from staff to doctor to get your answers. I'm 9 weeks in n know I got a ways to go. Unfortunately I'm finding lots of doctors or staff really don't explain the full extent this surgery takes toll on one's body. Hang in there, u r not alone! π
So sorry for your loss I am very close to my mum, I'm not surprised you went into depression and having to cope with a tkr on top, my thoughts are with you.

Hey Tom, yes you have a way to go but for me things started getting better after about 8 days. I was done with my walker after 11 days, then went to a cane until about 30 days after surgery, the last 10 of those days the cane was only for stairs.I'm just over 5 weeks since surgery, took my first bike ride today. My biggest problem was my surgeon put me on 6 days of a steroid treatment for inflamation which gave me terrible anxiety and poor sleep for about 8 days.Hang in there! Things will get better.
Thanks for the response. I feel like this can be the turning point as today stayed on meds and pain is somewhat better. I feel my set backs are my doing as I am not a fan of pain meds, and when you start chasing pain you can't win. So that slows down doing everything. I also should of insisted I stay in the hospital for an extra day but to late now. I hope to be off walker by mid week at I start pt Wednesday. This because of my set backs.
Thanks for your encouragement
OMG look what I started.!!!!
