Knee replacements going wrong ??

I have had 2 TKRs first 20 years ago other knee 18½ years ago. I was back working full time 6 months with each knee. No problems since and still ok. It can be a long process but it is worth it.

I would suggest anyone that is having any kind of surgery to do your own research yes the doctor is going to tell you some things but not everything when I had my TKR in 2017 I did my own research I want to know everything surgery, exercise , pt, what to expect after surgery and I joined this site to hear what other people was going through

i didnt want to know , but very happy with my surgeon he did a good job . Had no real issues except normal ones , but I know if i need to I can just make an appointment and see him. At my yearly check because of the posts here about failures etc I did ask him about it, and he told me that there are many poor surgeons in uk that were bought in from overseas and in his opinion shouldnt be operating , he said he spent most of his time in uk redoing bad jobs by same surgeons .

Hi purplelover, thank you for your interest in my dilemma, it helps to know somebody cares because I feel so let down after this shocking experience.
The surgeon has retired that did my operation…I only saw him once since he did the TKR which was 5 weeks after the op…he had a look at the x-ray and said he’d see me in 4 months time which would have been November 2018…he was standing up at the door to see me out so I had to squeeze in 2 questions while out in the corridor …1 was about the numbness and the other was about the swelling…he made me feel I was insignificant, anyway I wasn’t called back in november, or December so I rang his secretary to ask why she made some excuse about him retiring…my after care is almost non existent…she got me an appointment for following week…I feel like I was abandoned, so the replacement surgeon told me the reason I am still in pain is because my implant is loose…I can’t believe it…I’m sorry to hear you are having issues too, I hope your gp has given you more pain relief. I also have diabetes. It’s still early days for you, 10 weeks is not long, I know it feels like forever, this major operation is so slow and has taken months of living away from us…keep in touch…I’m waiting for my medical records and then I’m going for second opinion

Hi Rosemary,

I dont mean a DVD. It was a disc with the xray of my knee. Yes i waited 11 years for the 2nd one. Even though it was bone on bone it rarely hurt. It was only 6 months before the surgery that it started to bother me at night. I went to France and Italy and found walking painful. I had to take tylenol 3 to cope. i only had the occasional flare up prior to the last 6 months. I waited 3 years for my first one. i saw the surgeon annually but most of the time the knee was fine. i turned down 3 operation dates. Even with bone on bone most times except for flare ups it was fine.

I always do lots of research and watching an actual operation to me was interesting. During my 2nd surgery i could hear the drill and other noises happening. it didnt bother me.

GRRRR! I’ve been hopping mad at my surgeon, so much so that I asked to see the physician assistant rather than him. I have seen another surgeon in a larger city that specializes in TKR problems and revisions, but so far - he says as long as I’m making progress, we won’t consider a revision. I do not intend to allow the first surgeon to ever touch me again.
I’m so sorry you are having to go through this again!

No, I’m in England, but lucky to live near an orthopaedic centre of excellence. It’s not my local hospital, but all elective ortho surgical procedures are carried out there now. I haven’t seen my surgeon since I saw him in theatre. Intensivists, specialist nurses and physios looked after us post-op and I’ve been able to contact a discharge team for any queries since leaving hospital. I have my post op review in 2 weeks at my local hospital where my surgeon is based.

A word of advice - ask how many knee replacements and revisions your next surgeon has done in the past 3 years and what the success rate is in both cases. Try to find a surgeon who averages around at least 100 replacements a year. I’m sorry you’re having such problems and wish you a successful outcome.

Oh I understand now Jean about the x-ray on disc…i heard the sawing and the drilling too,at the time it didn’t bother me as I wasn’t expecting it and i was sedated but this time I know what to expect and the thought of my sore knee getting sawed and drilled and battered and bruised again terrifies me.

Hi Michele, I didn’t want to look up TKR on google as you always hear people say, the worst thing to do is look up Doctor Google…that’s why we trust our Doctors and surgeon to do the right thing, not anymore, I only joined this site 10 weeks after operation in desperation to get some advice…I never heard of this forum until then.

Thank you so much Lynda for advice and kindness

Alimarie you TKR was same time as me then ( last June )I’m waiting for my medical records and then I’m going for second opinion. Your 2nd surgeon sounds good, he didn’t rush in to send you for a revision,
Best of luck with your progress
Rose.

Wow, that’s some admission, I live in Ireland though, and the surgeon was Irish.

HI Rosemary…i have an allergic reaction to anaesthetic …itching…so they gave me less but warned me that i would be able to hear parts of the surgery. I didnt want to hear the surgery but while happening didnt bother me.

Did you get an epidural? Thsts what I had, I had ear phones on listening to music but still heard the sawing and drilling.

yes ..i had the epidural…no music. I am in Canada where are you?

I’m in Ireland, a small little country beside the UK

I have been to Ireland…stayed in a lovely place called Malahide…lovely place on the coast. We stayed for several days before going to England. i was born in England but emigrated to Canada as a child.

with you on that Rosemary we are all different all heal different some quick some not ive been a nurse and never dreamed that i would struggle lime i have with this hated new knee we trust our surgeons to do the best for each and everyone of this I did research my surgery he came from Canada originally fantastic write-up but what an ignorant arrogant man he was did not like being questioned at all thank God I’m now under another surgeon who is highly recommended in his field in England a very nice man indeed due to retire but he’s going to try and get my knees right before he does retire

Malahide is so beautiful, we went there a lot when my kids were young…

Wishing you the very best Kathleen with your progress…thank you for agreeing with me about us trusting the surgeon, I did read up on him after the operation and sure he sounds like a God :roll_eyes::roll_eyes: it’s a terrible shame he didnt study " common decency and good manners too"
