hello all, I am almost 8 weeks tkr and despite a slow start I have had a fairly smooth recovery so far, however I am totally unable to even attempt to kneel on my new knee,we heat our house with a wood burner which involves a fair bit of kneeling to set/clean and put fuel on.At the moment it is not a problem but come autumn time it will be. Do any of you have any advice? are you able to kneel down and if so how on earth do you get back to standing? the logistics of it defeat me !
Hey Dotty. I asked my surgeon and physio about kneeling and was told that I wouldn't be able to knee anymore but if I did need to kneel to kneel on a pillow and only if it was absolutely necessary. They recommended not to kneel at all!! Is there anyone else who could help you with the burner? Xx
12 weeks post op. I was told no kneeling. If you have to you must put a lot of padding down first? I am not sure how you get up! I was in the garden and knelt on none operated knee and that was fun getting up. It shows that my muscles are still weak.. I do find that my operated leg still gives way when walking, this is with no notice. I hope that this is weak muscles as do not want anyone touching / doing anything with knee cause like you now doing well. Sorry didn't mean to go on about me.
You might have to get someone ele to light your fire?
im 12 weeks post op and I did kneel in mine to get something from under the bed but like clarkey said I used a pillow and I was fine im sure come autumn ul be more confident about trying it???
I was told that it would be extremely unlikely that I will be able to kneel again after my knee replacement.

You're not really supposed to knell on it (and I have never wanted to, to be honest). The only time I have ever had to was when I couldn't get out of a very wide hotel bath. You are at a very early stage, so I certainly wouldn't risk it at the moment.
I don't get down on the floor, to be honest.

When I went for an appointment to be put on the waiting list for a TKR that was one of the questions I asked. It was a registrar I saw and he told me that one surgeon says you should never kneel and the other says you can if you want to!
sorry the answer doesn't help you, but it just shows how each surgeon thinks differently, even in the same hospital!
its strange how information is so different because I was told I could do everything on my new knee that I could do on my old????
Yes Andrea, different medics tell different advice. Perhaps I should have seen your consultant. Lol I would have great trouble going down on my other "good" knee as I had polio as a child so that leg is already very weak.
it cert does susan but to be fair the treatment is very different as well???? I was 4 days in hosp sent home never had any physio had a 5 min visit from a district nurse who whipped off my dressing and left me to clean it myself had a 10 min consultation 6 weeks after my op with my cosultant and thats been that!!!!! OH apart from when I had a telephone con with my GP when I was rolling in pain only to be told pain was a state of mind and to try carry on!!!!!

I'm 10 months post TKR and ( excuse the language) it hurts like HELL when I kneel on my knee! I don't think there's an answer whether you should or will be able to kneel. I think it all depends on how it feels when you do it!
And getting up??? Let's just say I don't think I'll ever be able to get down on my knees or the floor again!
We are all different & I envy those who have no trouble with kneeling or getting down on the floor.

I haven't been able to knee on my left knee done 8 years ago...so I know I won't be able to kneel on the right knee. (12 weeks PO).. we also had a solid fuel fire which needed cleaning out each morning and stoked up during the day. We had to change the heating system to gas.
Oh my, you poor thing - you've had it tough! I'm only 2 weeks in But so far, spoke to my gp on the phone and he gave me a scrip for tramadol without a problem and had a hot patch on my knee I was worried about, so my consultant saw me the day after to check it out. Have yet to experience physio appointments, but so far have had a good experience.
BUT, I did go to a private hospital (paid by NHS) so don't know if that makes a difference?!
ive got to admit pru it wasnt a perfect bend when I did it lol and I wouldn't have tried it without that thick pilllow I was a bit like a new born foal getting up I sort of rolled around and heaved myself up with the side of the bed lol
I couldn't kneel before the operation because of the pain was told you shouldn't but I wouldn't try anyway because my right knee needs doing have got an appointment for 13th nov to see consultant about that

no it doesnt thats the waiting list that determines where you go. Its all about funding for physio!!! I no this because I work for the NHS and its frightening the state its getting in????? However I am seeing my GP on Monday an appt I requested 3 weeks ago grrrrrr so im going to ask about meds and physio but im not holding my breath lol im going to ask for a sleeping tab cos im shattered with not sleeping through??
My GP asked me where I wanted to have my op done and I said I didn't know. He then referred me to a local private hospital, as an nhs patient and I cannot fault my treatment. I saw my consultant each day I was in hospital and I day twice. I was given physio from the day after my op and was given 4 further physio appointments. Yesterday I received my appointment with my consultant for the end of June. I had a telephone consultation with my GP about my difficulty in sleeping and was prescribes something to help. Maybe I am just very lucky to live where I do with such a good GP practice.
Confidence plays a big role, for sure, but I'm talking about the actual pain that is felt when I kneel.
Some ( I'm probably one of them) may never be able to kneel again simply because it's too painful. Others may be able to do it just fine. Like I said, we are all different, that's why I don't think there is really an answer as to whether we should or ever be able to kneel.
I do hope Dotty will be able to light her fire in the fall
