Labral tear in hips not hip replacement

Hi all, Ive recently seen my consultant and he is sure the pain im suffering from is not worn out hips but labral tears to both hips due to the shape of my bones causing impingement. He said the symptoms are really similar to worn hips. Im now waiting for an mri just to confirm.

My consultant was really annoyed about what my doctor had told me and has mentioned it can be repaired through keyhole surgery where they stitch up the labral gasket and reshape my bones.

Problem being ive got quite a bit of wear and tear due to them not picking this up not quick enough. Looks like i will need a replacement some time in the future anyway.

Has anyone else heard of labral tears?

Thanks

Scott

Hi Scott, I obviously can't diagnose what you actually have going on in there but can empathise with mixed messages you get. Laberal tears was something I had thrown in the pot originally because I have slight dysplasia but apparently had too much pain! I got passed on to another consultant who then took six months and an MRI to tell me I needed new hips due to osteoarthritis.

Getting an answer nearly drove me mad and while you wait the damage just gets worse.

Good luck.

Fingers crossed they i will get my mri in a month or so. At least this will show what needs doing??

Scott - Been there done that, 12 weeks after my first Right THR, out walking feeling fantastic.

Walking along, and suddenly it felt as though somebody had stabbed me with a knife in my left groin, doubled over screaming in pain, Dr suggested I had pulled a muscle, also said it may be a labral tear, only the time frame for pain to go away would tell the story, 6 weeks for a muscle and 12 weeks for labral tear, 13 weeks later woke up one morning no pain.

14th week, after THR, appointment came through for specialist at hospital where I had my right THR done, they did an x-ray, and said there was a clear difference in the gapping between bone of pelvis and top of femur, specialist confirmed I had probably torn my labrum, he pointed out to me the odd shape of the ball of my femur, and said thats arthritis wear and tear, and its all rough instead of nice and smooth, and one of those rough spots probably caught the lebraum and tore it. another 6 months later a lot of pain, waiting for THR, but had it done finally. Would I have the surgery again, yes probably will have to if my family history of living into their 90's is any indication, I am 64.
