Hi,

I have hip dysplasia and am waiting for a labral tear repair which I am pretty nervous about as have never had surgery before and am extremely squemish 😓

Just wondered if anyone else here has had this surgery and can tell me how it went for them and what to expect post op? Any advice?

Hi Sarah. I had larval tear. This was misdiagnosed for 18 months as it was said not to be showing up on X-rays and MRI scan.

I then fought to see a real specialist who immediately diagnosed the tear. I had the op keyhole but as it had been left too long it had calcified and wasn't able to be fixed only cleaned up this op was a walk in the park. Recovered very quickly.

6 months later needed a THR this op and recovery has been much harder. If you have a really good surgeon and it is fixable you will be great. Just do the physio. Recovery is about 6 weeks.

I had a hip replacement 7 days ago on my left hip I had an MRI a couple of months before and they found I have a labral tear and fluid around my right hip. I was born with congenital hip dispaysia. I really thought the tear and fluid I have in my right hip was nothing to worry about really as it doesn't bother me so much. Now I am wondering if I should have it investigated more. Last thing I want is another hip replacement

My daughter age 42, had a Labral tear repair done after an auto accident. She did not stay overnight at the hospital but was out after about 3 hours. She is an accountant and returned to work on crutches the very next day. I was shocked about 3 days later to see her when returning from work wearing her heels and using just one crutch. I think she did this for about 2 weeks and than was walking unaided. She had very little pain from the surgery. We are all different though, so good luck to you.

I am in the same position as you, I have bilateral hip dysplasia but diagnosed quite late, as I am now 46 years old. I also have arthritic changes within the hips and have eventually been referred to the Royal National Orthopedic hospital at Stanmore to see if they could try and save the right hip. (That's my worst)

After an MRI with contrast, they have found a labral tear which could well explain the constant pain I have when anything I do. I now walk with a stick as it gives out constantly.

I am on the list for a hip arthroscopy but am due to see my surgeon in a few weeks to discuss it more.

Everything I have read about repairing the tear when caused by dysplasia, indicates that it's a stop gap. They will not be fixing the cause unless they correct the dysplasia by realigning the hips. I am not a good candidate for this as there is already too much cartilage damage. I am just hoping they can get rid of the pain and at least give me a few more years before I have to have the hips replaced.

Have you had any of that explained to you? I believe it's takes anywhere between 2 and 8 weeks to get over the operation and up to 6 months full recovery. When are you due for your op? I know exactly what you are going through.

I had dysplasia and labral tear. Surgeon suspected arthritis also but could not see it on scans. So he told me he would do the arthroscopy and if the repair did not work then at least he would be able to photograph the inside of the hip. He discovered arthritis due to the tear being too severe and the photos allowed him to refer me for a THR aged a v fit 50. 

If this happens to you get them to check you out for hypermobility - bendiness - as this should influence the size of the THR they do. They missed this with me and gave me 3 years of pain until a recent revision.

My message - I hope v much you get a successful repair. If you dont then be very cautious about the next steps and make sure every part of your physiology is taken into account.

I was missing diagnosed for 4 years finally they sent me for a labral repair trouble is it was too late for me and the following 2 years have been an absolute nightmare pain every day. I'm 3 weeks post op of a total hip replacement and I'm 29. The labral repair wasn't a painful experience more uncomfortable but as it was the wrong treatment for me my recovery never progressed just worsened

Good luck and opt for spinal if you can instead of a general you recover much quicker
