I am enquiring about other people's experiences with knee replacement operations. The current situation is lack of cartilage in both knees causing pain going up and down stairs, but it is possible to walk on straight areas.
Hi, 55 years old and experiencing the same symptoms as you, my GP has done some blood test and has informed me that I have ostioarthritis, and told me that there is nothing that can be done until the condition deteriorates so much that new joints would be the only option, I have been prescribed codipal pain kiilers and told to get on with life!!

Hi, I am now 56yrs old and have osteoarthritis in my left knee following two arthroscopies for torn medial meniscus (cartilages). When I went into hospital for the second op it was actually for a half replacement which I was told was the only thing that would help me but just before the op I suddenly had a new surgeon. He told me I was too young for the replacement and asked if he could do an arthroscopy to see if there was another reason for the pain. There was...another torn cartilage. By that time the arthritis was severe but without the torn meniscus as well I have done really well for two years. I have another app next month at the NOC as the pain has got suddenly bad again but my knee is also locking and giving way and I am very sure I have torn the meniscus again. I wont have the replacement until I know that all the pain is really caused by the arthritis as I can cope with that. I was very grateful to that second surgeon and I did better after his arthroscopy than I did the first one.
I am 36 yrs old. I did arthroscopy at the age of 18 yrs following an injury during sports (mind you I never was an athlete but I was just playing at home in a small yard!). Now I am suffering from knee locking again. Since 18 yrs, I never felt that I could climb the steps properly, but I had to climb. 3 years ago my knee locked. The x-ray showed that I am suffering from arthritis. The doctors said I am too young for knee replacement (and I don't want to do it now either) This week I had an inflammation in my knee. All I did was that I played with my daughter in the bedroom!. At times my knee functions quite well but at other times (even at night) it locks and the pain is enormous. I am taking anti-inflammatory tablets. Is swimming good for my condition?
Any other suggestions?
