Hope someone can help i was diagnosed with lack of vitamin d level was 18. Was put on 20,000 iu a day for 15 days by the 6th day couldnt even walk my whole body just gave up was taken into hospital loads of test done scans all clear apart from vitamind levels took 10days to get back to where i was before. I am totally exhausted all the time and have terrible pains in my legs and arms. I am now only taking 800iu onmy 7th day pain is worse no appetite have not eaten for 2 days. Can anyone recomend anything else i can take, foods. I have been going out everytime the sun has come out but that hasnt been often. thanks
According to the recommendations you should have got enough - the amount aimed for is IRO 300,000 IU. Some people belive a lower dose over a longer time works better as the body possibly doesn't absorb it well at very high doses and the side effects can be unpleasant. It can also take a few weeks for the higher vit D to combat the symptoms, they don't always go quickly.
However - is it the vit D level that is causing the problem or is the vit d level is sign of what is REALLY cauing the problem? Low vit D is very common in autoimmune disorders
And there is no reason why you shouldn't take a bit more as a supplement. There are very few foods with significant amounts of vit D. They include oily fish, liver, egg yolk and some mushrooms.
Thanks for your reply eileen so you think i should stay on the low dose. Do the side effects subside
Here where I live in northern Italy - where you would imagine sun provided a fair bit of vit D - it is estimated that about 80% of the population is vit D deficient! Our local vit D guru says to take 2000 IU/day all winter at least, preferably all year. I have taken 800IU for the lst 8 years - but I know my vit D is high enough.
However - what I'm really saying is to carry on with AT LEAST the 800 IU and if the symptoms don't improve in a month or so check what tests they did - most GPs wouldn't do a lot of the tests required for diagnosing autoimmune disorders. Don't be fobbed off.
i do have a good doctor i am phoning her tomorrow its just these effects are killing me i cant do anything at all what is autoimmune
Autoimmune disorders are illnesses where something has gone wrong with your immune system. It normally attacks invading germs or other sunbstances that are not good for us - like pollen in hayfever for example - but for some reason it goes haywire and starts attacking the tissues in your body and causes inflammation and a lot of other effects.
There are all sorts of autoimmune disorders involving all sorts of parts of the body. Examples include Type 1 diabetes (not Type 2, that is different), rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vasculitis (inflamed blood vessels), some sorts of asthma and multiple sclerosis - and a whole lot more. Low vit D has been found to be associated with autoimmune disorders but they don't know if it is cause or effect. Fatigue is also very common in these sort of illnesses and so is joint and muscle pain.
It may not be anything really nasty - but it needs investigating properly by the experts. Usually you start with a rheumatologist.
Thanks for your reply eileen never heard of that will speak to my doctor x
I feel for you, my sister is in the same boat she was at a level of 19 and has been pretty much bed bound for the 3mths she can only sit up for a few min at a time as her pain is bone and muscle in her upper torso and arms, she's had treatment for only 1 1/2mths of a really high dose of 40,000iu a day for 2wks but is now on a maintenance dose of 1,000iu a day, she saw a massive improvement for the 2wks on the high dose but has started getting worse again.
Yfrom what Iv been told or have seen on forums most were treated for 3mths with medium dose of Vit D 10,000iu - 20,000 a day and then dropped to the maintenance dose, my sisters dose was really high, yours seems a bit short for a treatment (again this is only from searching every story/ forum for help)
We ended up speaking to the doctor to check her Vit D levels again which have improved to 44 but the doctors are now requesting another blood test- hopefully to get her levels higher.
From what I have read you need to get your levels back up between 50-70 and then it can take 3mths to a year to see real improvements specially with pain, I suppose as the body finally gets the right levels it can start repairing itself, if your levels are still low this could be why your symptoms are still bad. They can drop more if you have an underlining condition as was mention to you before, things like crohns/ coeliac can affect your absorption.
Sorry I can't give you any real advice but I know sometimes it helps hearing other people's stories, I hope you find your answer or get another action plan in place with your doctor, like us we are waiting for the next blood test results to find out our next plan.
Ruth 🙂
Thanks for replying ruthie just found out today that i cant take vitamins oraly only been on 800iu for 7 days and the reaction has been the same as 20,000iu. Pain was horrendous was makingeverything worse could hardly walk again back in bed again. Doctor putting another plan toether will hear from her tommorow,do have a great doctor. The reason the doctor put me on a low dose was to see my reaction that is how she found out that it was the vitamins i was sensitive to. I hope your sister feels better soon xxx
Hi Ranger,
I am in the same situation as you as my vitamin d levels were at 13. My symptoms were pretty bad, I became homebound and at times bedridden. I couldn't take vitamin d3 either, it gave me bad side effects. I only can tolerate 600iu. Plus I take magnesium with it.
I had countless testing done from so many specialist but all test came back negative. So I blamed my symptoms on vitamin d deficiency but my doctors weren't so positive that vitamin d deficiency was the cause.
I suffered for 8 months then a doctor tested my vitamin b6. It turns out I have vitamin b6 toxicity. Just from taking a multivitamin with only 25mg of b6. I stopped my multivitamin and my symptoms have improved.
Please have your b6 levels tested to be safe.
Take care
Yes - I can't emphasise enough that if you have such problems the doctors MUST look at all sides. And if the first one won't listen - try another, and another...
Thank god i dont take anything at all i hate taking any kind of drug of any shape or form do you take anything else what about dietry. I know there are not a lot of foods with vitamin d in them but if you do could you let me know thanks. Waiting on doctor getting back to me thanks for your reply x
My doctor is listening eileen thank god for that xxx
Some peopkle dont realise that they are taking these vitamins and they are doing more harm than good shoukld always go through a doctor xxx
Oh I see now why, have they mentioned anything about injections to you I was told By a friend that someone they knew received Vit D injections!?
Thank you, I hope you get yourself sorted soon, it's no joke having this problem people don't realise how painful it can be.
I have heard of the injections but it would be the same ingredients in it as tablet form doctor will let me know thanks ruthie x
Not necessarily. Tablets are mede using what are called fillers and they vary from one company to another. Some people are fine with one, not with another. Injections don't have the same stuff in them. It may make a difference.
What a nitemare 😟
So basically you have an intolerance to something in the Vit D which is causing an autoimmune response in the body, do you have any food allergies by any chance?
Can I ask what symptoms you had before they diagnosed Vit D deficiency?
It's definitely a tricky one for the doctors to solve in your case, it will be interested to hear how you get on!
tierdness pains in shoulders neck back arms hips legs and feet. dont have any food allergies.
thanks eileen thats made me feel a bit better maybe thats what the doctor will do. dont know anything about all this.
