Hi Peter 67- this is a horrid condition as your finding out unfortunatkey, and what I have quickly realised it effects different people in various different ways -
i have tried various PPI they all have horrible nasty side effects, which make you feel worse in others ways headaches, stiffness and generL feeling of unwellness.
i have been prescribed Ranatadine and have taken for about 5 years 1 @ night or if I need a top up 1 in the day - I normally take just the one at night and if needs be top up with Gaviscone extra.
a few months ago my reflux was really bad , starting with a sore tongue, bad taste in my mouth along with throat clearing, spitting up the mucas and a very hoarse throat and really on able to tolerate drinking water, anything I ate made me feel full and a lump in my throat - horrible -
After exstensive research myself and good information on this site from other sufferes I have calmed the whole reflux thing Down
I down loaded a list of alkaline foods and tried eating and using mainly alkaline foods, introducing them to my diet, eating broccoli , leaf spinache even putting on my salads or putting in my sandwich instead of lettuce, eating tomatoes, sometimes grilled on un buttered toast, ( check out the list it's pretty exstensive including fruit
( you will be surprised the foods which are high in acid and agrivated reflux - oats porridge for instance or muesli, sultanas bananas - it's worth checking out.
only drink decaf products as others create acids - drinking water ( Tesco ) most branches - a water with a high PH level of 7. 7 or higher it dilutes the acid as does drinking a glass of water with lemon juice - crazy it sounds but it's. Different type of acid from stomach acid and helps dilute the stomach acidity.
i eat a handful of almonds daily this also dilutes the acid chewing them thoroughly helps neutralise the acid.
try looking at the site water for life on the net , a lot of helpful info there , finally stress and anxiety aggravate reflux or can cause a bad bout to come on
try grazing when eating , little and often not big meals, and try not to eat after 7pm to allow your food to digest before bed time , and finally if you feeling full try sitting upright to help your food to go right down and not get stuck.
i hope I haven't noted you , I'm trying to help as when mine was bad it was just unbearable , I had this on and off for quite. While, mines quiet at the moment , but I think before I eat anything it's become a habit now, albeit I'm slowly introducing a glass of white wine occasionally now or a vodka with the magic water if out socially
good luck - I think you will find most people have horrid effects from these meds, and if on them a long time coming off the reflux can become worse- a catch 22 situation
you can only make an informed personal choice ... Best wishes to you
