Laparoscopic GB removal

Hard not to say this politely but are any of you ladies who have had or having your gallbladder out by laparoscopic surgery overweight ??

I ask ask because I am and I've read somewhere that if your over weight with a BMI of over 30 you may not be able to have it done this way ?

Im booked for this procedure in April.

Gill

I haven't heard any of the such I consider myself as over weight I'm 5 4 1/2 and I'm 207 so I had my gallbladder removed this way

Hi, I had my gallbladder out last November and I had keyhole if this is what you are having, the doctors told me it goes better if you are the correct weight, this is not always possible I know, but I lost a stone anyway beforehand and I was 9stone 3 before I had the op, it still takes time to recover whether you are slim or not, I still have some nerve pains at nearly 4 months, take care hope all goes well Stella

I'm waiting to have my gallbladder removed because i have gallstone. I am not overwieght infact I have lost half a stone recently and am now 5ft and 8 and a half stone (about right).

Someone said to me that if you opt for keyhole surgery you have to sign a form before you go into theatre to say that if they find they cannot get stone out that way then they can carry on and give you the bigger op.

THEY DO NOT SEW YOU UP AGAIN WITH STONE STILL IN WAIT TILL YOU WAKE UP TO ASK YOU THEN BOOK YOU INTO THEATRE AGAIN!!!

Sorry trying to bring a bit of humour into it!!

Hope all goes OK.

Take care and keep in touch

Sarah

Hehe I know that 😆 , I signed to say that if complications arose like the gallbladder being stuck to my liver etc then they would take out instruments and do the big op , I don't want that unnessarceraly but having read about being overweight they may do that anyway. You did make me smile lol.

Hi gillypoo, assuming you are in the uk. I think they do it lap if they possibly can , as you say sign to say if necessary they will change to open. My bmi was 30 and I was never told to fat(hooray:-) I was told she had a struggle getting it out but that was nothing to do with my padding!! Trust them to do the best for you. Concentrate on your bit, keeping well before hand and getting plenty rest afterwards. Good luck , keep in touch with us here.

Thanks Octavia x

I'm new here, but had to respond.  I'm 5'3" and weight 250 lbs with most of it in my belly.  I've had previous abdominal surgeries but the doctor had no problem doing the gall bladder removal laproscopically.  Have you asked your doctor about this?  Believe me, the surgeons have been asked it before and she/he will be glad to put your mind at rest.  Good luck!

Hi ndm, when I saw my consultant he never examined me , just asked a few questions and told me the doctor had suggested I have the gallbladder out. He could see I was a larger lady ( I'm 210 lbs ) and 5'6" but didn't say I was overweight and couldn't be done. So I did wonder. I should of asked him !!  I'm sorry to read your other post and all the pIn and troubles you have been having , while I like to read the posts I get a bit scared as to what might happen to me. I know everyone is different and until the time comes we won't know , I hope you improve daily and if you need to let off steam the we are all here to help you. Do you have any relatives to help out for you ????

Keep your chin up ( an English expresion for keep cheerful ) xxxxxxxxx

Hello when I had my GB out last October I was 2 months post preg. with a BMI over 30 and I had the laparoscopic way. I think having had any stomach surgery previously is more likely  to  not qualified for this type of surgery. But I would try to inform myself with the surgeon that will be doing the op.

Thank you for the good wishes, Gillypoo.  I think lots of GB patients, not all by any means, are large, so it's pretty common for doctors to do laproscopic surgeries on us big gals.  When you're facing surgery, you can't always think about everything to ask.  I got scared too reading the posts before my surgery, but the fact is that it's no good to live with a diseased organ.  Like it or not (and no one does I'm sure), we have to face the prospect of surgery.  I hope you will have the very best of luck and a wonderful outcome.  It does happen!!  And I hope you have friends and relatives to help you.  I have a wonderful husband who has been a tremendous help.  I don't have much energy or strength and he's carrying the load for both of us.  Fortunately, we are retired and don't have kids so things are easier for us than for some.  I'm very lucky to have time to heal even tho it's been a slow process so far.  I shall endeavor to make Her Majesty proud and keep my chin up!  Thank you!
