Hi to Debbie50096 and all of you ladies with fibroids!
I had one big intramural fibroid (in the wall of the uterus) for several years, and it was 16x10 cm at the biggest. The doctor told me it was the same size as a 20 weeks pregnancy. My symptoms were back pains every morning and every time I was standing up for more than a few minutes, and a feeling of a ball bouncing on my bladder everytime I tried to go jogging. The fibroid also pressed against one of the ureters.
First I tried embolization. Unfortunately it did not help shrink the fibroid more than about 1-2 cm or so, but it did seem to stop it from growing. 3 months after embolization I also stopped having back pains
Then I tried the medication Esmya for 3 months but that did not help at all. No change in size of the fibroid or symptoms.
Finally i decided to remove the fibroid surgically and had a myomectomy in october 2014. My gynechologist did the surgery and managed to remove the fibroid laparoscopically! The surgery went very well, lasted about 2 hours, and there was almost no bleeding. Doctors admitted afterwards that my earlier embolization of the fibroid could have had a positive impact on the surgery since the fibroid was weakened. Less blood supply to the fibroid means less bloodloss during surgery
I had my check up this week and there is no sign of new fibroids and everything look fine. My uterus is back to its normal size again, only a teeny little bit of scar tissue in the wall where the fibroid was removed. The doctor assured me that it will disappear over time. My belly has three tiny scars (the fourth is hidden in my bellybutton) and I have had no pain or problems after the surgery.
I am really pleased to have gotten rid of the damn thing and I hope all of you find a solution you feel comfortable with. Never trust a doctor that says the fibroid is impossible til remove without doing a full hysterectomy! I am a living proof that even big fibroids can be removed laparoscopically. I am also glad I did the embolization before surgery, even if my doctor at that time said it would have no impact on the fibroid what so ever. She actually said it would be a waste of time. Well it was absolutely not a waste of time! If my fibroid hadn't been embolized, chances are that there would have been a lot more bleeding during my myomectomy, and I would have risked having either a full abdominal cut and a big scar across my belly, or even worse; an emergency hysterectomy.
Please don't choose hysterectomy as a first solution to your fibroids, unless you really feel okay by it. Seek other solutions as embolization, Esmya, myomectomy or other new and less invasive treatments. If your doctor tries to pressure you into doing a hysterectomy by telling you it's the only way, seek guidance from other doctors/specialists!
I wish you all good luck and hope you'll get rid of your "fibroidmonsters"!
