I'm due a hemithyroidectomy soon, I've been hyperthyroid for 3 years thanks to a large complex thyroid nodule. I've had two fna and both were negative for cancer. But it's large and has grown, I reckon a couple of cm. It was 6cm, now it's about 8cm. I've read a lot of people's experiences with large nodules, false negative fna and thyroid cancer. I do not want to be blind sighted here. It's causing me compression symptoms, it's growing behind my sternum, I have pain there and have for a while, my voice is hoarse. This could all of course just be because I have 8cm of complex, mostly solid nodule squashed in my neck. The fna withdrew a large amount of blood stained fluid from the nodule but its complex and the more fluid they removed the more the solid seemed to fill the spaces. I've read that some 95% of hot, autonomous nodules are benign, but I can't help thinking this is a very big nodule, which is growing, my ent says the fna can be wrong and they won't know until its out. I'm looking forward to having this out and no longer being hyper. I'm just worried.
One great thing about it is if cancerous it does not spread outside the nodule. Sounds like the beginning of a goiter. Have faith my friend. I believe all will turn out good for you. Maintain a good attitude. Most of the patients I have worked with that had positive attitudes came out the best.
I am a retired nurse.
God bless, and I think you will be ok.
Hi Panda, I had a total thyroidectomy last week Wednesday. My fnb was begnin and the result after checking the large mass that pushed my trachea aside was begnin too. They checked every little bit after it was out. Chances are good yours is begnin too.
