Left flank kidney pain

Hi everyone,

Ok, here we go... I've had left flank pain and what i believe to be kidney pain for months, i've had urine tested and there is blood and protein present, first of all i went to my doctors and they said it was a water infection, gave me antibiotics and sent me on my way.. Then a couple of weeks later the pain started again, BADLY, so i went to A&E and they diagnosed me with kidney stones and sent me for a CT scan to check things out but when i got there they changed their mind and ordered an ultrasound instead.. But the ultrasound showed no stones.. They still told me it was stones and sent me home.. The pain still remained... I've been to the doctors a few times and the blood and protein is still present! They tell me it must be an infection or something and treat me for it but again, it doesn't go away and upon testing my urine again, blood and protein are found.. I ended up ASKING them to refer me to urology for further investigations, this led to a camera in my bladder (can't remember what that was called!) but all was clear there.. The urologist seemed annoyed that I hadn't had a CT scan yet so sent me for 1, i haven't had the results for that yet but i'm in so much pain nearly all of the time.. Has anyone else experienced this and what did it turn out to be? So worried it's kidney disease or similar..

I have bad burning pain in my upper spine too which i read can be referred pain from the kidneys, i feel sick and breathless

My blood pressure has been slightly higher than normal for a few weeks now too, i'm at a total loss! They say my bloods are all ok although 1 set did show high markers for my kidneys, liver and inflammation but have since been normal

What else can cause blood and protein in the urine other than kidney disease..? And an ultrasound showed everything was ok but maybe the CT scan won't? So confused and fed up :-(

Hi liana

There are lots of things that can cause blood in the urine.

Until you get your ct results you won't really know if it's a stone or not.

My kidney stones are only ever picked up on a ct with contrast.

What side is your pain on?

The urine either gross or microscopic.

This is a last resort diagnosis.

You would have to go through a battery of test before you got diagnosed with this.

I wouldn't worry about kidney failure of you bloods are okay. It's highly unlikely you have it.

So I would try to rest.

The test you had was properly a flexi or rigid cystoscopy (in the bladder)

Might be worth asking them to send you for an ivp which is a test where they I next dye into you and have an X-ray.

If that shows nothing and the pain continues I would ask for a standing lying ivp to check for something called hyper mobile kidney.

If the pain is left sided there is something called nutcracker syndrome which can cause

These problems that's diagnosed with a renal angiogram.

You could potentially have iga neuropathy especially as you have protein in your wee but your bloods are normal so this is doubtful.

Yes it was a cystoscopy, i couldn't remember but you're right

I hope this CT scan shows something just so i can at least get treatment or know what i'm dealing with
