i have the same issue. I’m so mad I also had my left hip replaced two years before my right and i had no issues but now my left thigh is killing me and i know it’s because my right leg is a half inch too long. my doctor is just blowing me off saying lets give it time. my leg is not going to shrink
i am Having a similar problem linked to offset been too much for my body. I hope in the next couple of weeks to get calculations on all of my angles. i am left ruined from this surgery and once was a very active lady. i am just 34.
I did my THR a week ago and I noticed as well that my operated leg i slightly longer when I was lying on my back and knees in the air and saw that the crests of the knee cuos uneven. What method to use to measure the discrepancy. I think it is around 15mm which is not too bad.
So would with time become slightly shorter?
Im 48 yo
Hi laura,
They discrepency is quiet big and i am 5weeks post op with 5cm discrepency on left side. My issue is i had the Right side replaced 6yrs ago so the surgeon cant use the " we’ll even u out when we do the other side" jargon. I see the surgeon for 6 week check up next week to explain the surgery is a failure. I am 42 with 2 young kids and got the surgery done to enjoy playing with them. Now the imbalances caused will lead to knee and back damage if he does not fix his error
Hi, I have avascular necrosis in both the hips, the left hip collapsed and comparatively more painful to climb steps and I need to use a stick. I have been advised by my consultant to have a total hip replacement. I am considering it, weight the pros and cons. I am nearly 75 years old, semi-retired. The forum has been a very useful place to learn others experience having gone through THR. With regard to the change in the leg length, I wonder why a surgeon can not ensure that there is no such leg difference or at best minimize it by couple of mm only? Does the use of new tool like’’ computer aided robotic hand’’ help in achieving better outcome?
I had my second hip replacement (other side) 13 weeks ago and have been left with a leg length discrepancy. The first THR was perfect (different surgeon) this one has been awful. Post op it immediately it felt longer but the surgeon dismissed this as a normal post op feeling , no mention of leg length discrepancy in the discharge letter. Horribly difficult recovery eventually after 6 weeks I saw a physio as struggling to walk and stand and awful back ache. They got me an appointment with the surgeon who finally admitted a 0.8 mm discrepancy.
I find walking extremely uncomfortable and difficult, standing is hard and I’m in tears of frustration and depression most of the time. I have been told to wait 6 months and it will all miraculously settle down and I’ll be able to walk normally.
For those who had a leg length discrepancy after hip replacement:
Did it settle down after 6 months?
Can you now walk easily and not notice a leg length difference?
Have you had to get shoe lifts and if so what happens when you have to walk barefoot around the house?
Where do you get shoe lifts from and how do you know what height to get? What happens when you want to wear sandals?
I’m 13 weeks post hip replacement and have been ‘given’ a leg length discrepancy- devastated by it. But I’d love to know how you’ve coped with the leg length difference and what has helped. Did your pelvis ‘realign’ and compensate?
I am 10 years post thr. I have a leg difference on operated side of almost an inch. Took 6 years to get this diagnosed. I have a heel lift in opposite side. I saw an osteopath who was the person who eventually diagnosed the issue but by then everything was bedded in. I cannot lift my leg at from sitting, can’t put my own socks on and in constant pain. I was told just be grateful you had replacement as you would be in a wheelchair by now. Very upset
