Leg Length

I have had two hip relpacements over a period of time.  I had the right one done and then a few years later the other one.  I told the doctor the leg that was already done was longer than the one he is going to do.  He checked it out and said it was about an eight of an inch shorter.  He said he would fix that with the next replacement.  He didn't get it fixed and it remained an eighth of an inch shorter.  I just let it go.

Now that I am older, I have trouble with my balance.  When walking, I will lose my balance and grab onto something.  It seems strange that an eighth of an inch could make the difference.  Anyway I have fallen four times this year.

Would lifts make a difference?  If so what kind?  Any information will help.

Thanks,

Sharon

PS  I know I could try and use a cane or a walker, but I get up and down fast and it is such a bother.

Dear chicky

Is the diffrece 8 inch ?

Shoe lifet is help full i had 1.5 inch leg diffrence so the I used to use shoe lift i couldnt even walk 50 metr with out it

It gave me balance .

Hi Sharon

Sorry to hear about your falls.

Maybe you could try shoe inserts to make up that shortness. However, i cannot believe an eighth of an inch would make that much difference to your balance. Maybe there is another cause? Does the leg seize up? Muscles refuse to worK/ That could be a muscle spasm. Why now? Is there another underlying cause?

Time to see a physio or doctor I think.

I am 6 months post surgery my operated let is about half to one centimetre longer, when I had my shoes heeled I had them put a second heel rubber on the show for the shorter leg works fine for me, wouldn't work for a greater differce but foe smaller amounts it's fine

Hi Chicky1

Welcome to the forum

If I were you I would first make sure that the leg difference is the cause of your falls and not  another medical condition. So I would make an appointment with your Doctor to get that checked out. I see no point in spending money  on something and it either makes things worse or doesn't work.I would also make arrangements to have your hips x rayed to make sure there is nothing wrong with those after you have fallen because that could be another possibility.

I have 4cm leg length difference and find it increasingly difficult to stand and walk and often wobble or fall. I do have a lift in my shoe which i got from the hospital but due to the difference they could not make a sshoe raise larger enough to put in my shoe so its not the correct height to make me normal. I do find it helps a little though and does relive some pressure and pain when im walking.

My operated leg is just a centimetre longer and the surgeon told me to get a cobbler to shave a few mm off my right shoe ad add a few to the left. Quite an expensive way but totally undetectable. I don't think I'll bother tho, cos to be honest I just seem to tilt my pelvis when I walk and it's ok haha 😃

Apparently its quite normal to have around 1cm difference. My doctor is hoping to move my hip down 3/4cm to make me normal which is quite an exciting thought for me considering iv never been able to walk flat and when i stand flat my legs look ridiculous. But glad to hear you are coping well
