Leg still swollen

It is nearly five weeks since my THR and everything seems to have gone very, very well. But last evening I left my DVT stockings off to give my legs an airing and I was a bit alarmed to find that after an hour my operated leg had swollen back to its original post op tree trunk size with tight skin and difficult to bend. Worrying that according to the hospital programme I should be able to abandon my stockings completely in just over a week.
Is the swelling unusual after such a time - should I worry ??

Hi John are you still taking the thinning tablets? I was given asprin 2 daily for 6 weeks, know others have different meds due to intolerance. The stockings are a pain and I admit to giving up on them quite early with no swelling encountered. Think you should stick with them particularly when inactive, half hour breather a day was what I was drilled into me. Assume you seeing consultant at 6 weeks? If not, call your surgery and see what they recommend, better being over cautious. I know what an absolute pain they are to remove and put back on, my husband had a right to do with mine and the air was blue from both parties!

HI ITS 7 WEEKS SINCE I HAD MY SURGERY AND MY LEGS STILL SWELL! I WAS SURPRISED I WASNT ADVISED TO WEAR DVT STOCKINGS AS I HAVE ALWAYS HAD TO WEAR THEM IN THE PAST WHEN I HAVE HAD OTHER SURGERY I WAS GIVEN BLOOD THINNERS TO TAKE FOR 32 DAYS! I WOULD HAVE STRUGGLED AS I AM ON MY OWN AND NOT BEING ABLE TO BEND DOWN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO PUT ON, I LOOKED IT UP ON THE INTERNET ABOUT SWOLLEN LEGS AFTER HIP SURGERY APPARENTLY ITS NORMAL AND YOU CAN STILL HAVE SWELLING MONTHS AFTER! HOPE THIS HELPS BUT IF IN DOUBT CONSULT YOUR GP OR YOUR CONSULTANT TAKE CARE ALL THE BEST CYNDEY

Hi HLMUK,
thank you for your reply. All my drugs, including the blood thinners, ran out about a week ago - and I have the meeting with the consultant in three weeks time. I am active, doing about a kilometre each day plus a lot of domestic duties. The stockings are a nuisance and can make sleeping a problem - but I do have a sympathetic wife to help me get them on and off.

Please don’t shout. Using all capitals is called shouting and is considered to be bad posting form apart from being harder to read. Cheers, Richard

I ran out after one week of the prescribed meds, bloomin pharmacist miscounted. Can you take asprin? If you can suggest stockpile them along with an anti acid drug which your pharmacy would recommend to be taken along with the asprin, if not, get to see your GP, myself and people I know had been told as long as you wear the TED’s you need the blood thinners. Hope this is helpful.

I didn’t have the stockings and had very swollen legs and feet. Had to inject myself everyday for a month. In fact one day I looked like alien legs, looked really weird but did eventually pass, as you walk more it helps but don’t rush it.

Hi John,

I was not given stockings just twenty eight days of injections, my leg would swell on and off for about twelve weeks much less swelling towards the twelve week mark, but you could tell it was slightly swollen by bedtime. Just keep an eye on it, you will be fine.

HI Richard I wasnt shouting I have not heard of such a thing before! The reason for capitals is ease and convenience plus the fact my sight isnt great either! Sorry it upset you, I am not on here to upset anyone I have better things to do have a good day…Cyndey

Dear Cyndey I think you will find that a quick internet search will confirm what I pointed out in my posting, also messages in all capitals are less easy to read. Hope that helps.
Cheers Richard

Thank you Richard we are never too old to learn, I believe you! I honestly thought it would be easier to read capitals, I dont use the internet that much, but I do use email and admit I dont use capitals unless its required, for some reason it seems easier to use capitals on this particular web site, thanks again for your information Cyndey

Glad to help. Cheers, Richard
