has anyone experienced there legs twitching/kicking when there asleep i have been woke up a few times lately doing this
Could be Restless Legs Syndrome?
Could be due as suggested in Pepasan's reply but could also be due to a deficiency of some sort. When I've experienced such twitching during the night it often turns into a full blown cramp. I have found that including plenty of known magnesium-rich foods into my diet can help - you can look up a list on line - I find dried apricots particularly helpful. My GP also demonstrated how to stretch the calf muscles before bedtime which certainly helps to avoid the cramp.
I've found sleeping on the floor ceases the sensation.
But to avoid completely, I tend to avoid caffeine at night.
I'm not sure whether this is helping but I've only had a couple of attacks so far this year.
I'm at level 5 with a gfr of 10.
Hya,
It sounds like restless leg, try drinking some tonic water it has quinnine in it, if that doesn't help your dr can give you quinnine tablets. Its most annoying especially if you are trying to sleep!
already on quinnine 😞
Hi Davey,
Yes, unfortunately this is a commond side effect. You mentioned you're already on quinine; the other thing I can recommend is stretching your legs before bed. 10 minutes worth of stretching really works wonders for me, I hope it works for you too.
Hi Davey,
I'm new to this forum, but have CKD stage 5 and muscle cramps have been an issue for some time now. Magnesium supplement helped at first, but was not the main reason for my cramps. Recently my nephrologist put me on L-Carnitine supplement which actually was almost miraculous. I still get a few minor finger and toe cramps, but no more major calf cramps in the middle of the night. I recently read that quinine is no longer recommended for cramps. My suggestion is discuss it with your nephrologist, as it really helped a lot in my case.
