Legs

Does anyone else find that their legs get really 'antsy' at night? I have enough trouble sleeping on my back, but with this as well it means I'm barely getting any rest at all. πŸ˜”

Kathy10666 I struggled with sleep and its been 3 months. I found if I prop a lot of pillows in back of me I can doze off. Its like I am sitting up trying to sleep. Its getting better. I hope this helps somewhat.

Hi Kathy, yes! I think I know what you mean; they feel irritable and twitchy?

I find it starts after being in bed for maybe an hour. I have to get up and have a drink etc for maybe half an hour then start "bedtime" all over again and usually it's ok after that. I hope it doesn't go on indefinitely as I'm losing precious sleep!

Best of luck, JEM

Yes I do. Sometimes I have spasms but all the time I have a light tingling sensation mainly in lower leg when in bed. It's a bummer but better than the pre op hip pain I suppose.

Yes I certainly have tingly legs.. specially at night. What about ankle pain? That's my latest!!!

Now 10 weeks from op and this is a new happening?

hi kathy,

It is pretty normal to feel sensations in your legs - especially the one that was operated on --

especially the leg cramps (not only in calves) were painful -

Here on the forum a member suggested to drink some tonic water - apparently the quinine calms down the nerves - It helped me and still does -

Are you still on blood thinners?

You can also ask for muscle relaxants from your GP -

How are you do otherwise ?

Hi Renee, I am still on blood thinners and have another couple of weeks on them. I will try tonic water tonight and see if it helps.

Very excited to get the dressing removed this afternoon. It's starting to get very itchy, which my Husband says is because it's healing. I do hope so.

I hope you are doing well. Best wishes, Kathy xx

Dear Renee

Perhaps that was me but it was for leg cramp not twitchy legs. I found for twitchy legs that magnesium seems to help. I take one 100mg tablet morning and night.

Hope that helps someone.

Cheers Richard

Thanks Richard, it's definitely not cramp but more like restless/twitchy legs. Very odd.

Dear Kathy

I've suffered from twitchy legs for so many years and read somewhere recently about magnesium to deal with it only a few weeks ago and went out and bought a pot of it. I can only say it seems to be helping but it is early days for me.

The quinine to deal with cramp was very convincing as it was instant and since taking quinine I have not had leg cramp!

Cheers Richard

Yes I was 4 weeks post op when this happened the leg had a mind of its own I was up most of the night sat in a chair .it didn't last too long but it was rotten while it did

Hi Kathy i still sometime have it . I got some medication for that. Usually started night time and wake me up. I got some strching excersice and they help as well. It will get better with the time.

Hi Kathy,

I had this problem that my legs would twitch when I went to bed. It was agony as the twitch kept jarring my operated hip!  Someone who was a nurse said that major surgery like this can result in your magnesium levels dropping which is what causes the twitching.  Like Richard, I started taking magnesium supplements and within a matter of days, the twitching stopped. I took the supplement for a few months and the twitching never came back.

Good Luck!

It sounds like that's what I need. Thanks David πŸ‘

10 weeks post op and the restless legs  (taking magnesium on recommendation on here and pharmacy) are under control, as are the leg cramps (tonic for the quinine).  But if I stop either the magnesium or tonic the problem recurs, though it is a small nuisance compared with what we have gone through!!

Good luck

Also Epsom salts in your bath! Get a sack online!! Much cheaper that way ..

Hi Kathy.  I don't get twitchy legs at night but I do feel I have to stretch the whole of my operated leg as soon as I wake up.

Unfortunately Kathy isn't allowed to get into bath yet if it's still early days for her πŸ˜”

Dear Sandra

That's a shame as it is obviously more effective than even a prolonged hot shower but of course even that can be very relaxing and worth trying to see if it helps her.

Cheers

Richard
