Hi,
I had my gallbladder removed 7 weeks ago, due to my gallbladder not working correctly. Although the op was laparscopic I was in so much pain I had to have an epidural. Anyway ever since the op I have been in pain, felt really sick and cannot eat!. I get excruciating pain up to an hour after food. Also if I lie down in the same position for too long and stand up that brings on the pain too. I have also found that I keep getting a bile taste in my mouth, excessive sweating and fatigue. I also generally feel 'under the weather' at least once a day if not more! After several visits to the hospital and clear test results they think I have SOD - a problem with the bile duct which may require a stent. Has anyone else had these problems after gallbladder removal and had a successful outcome? My life is a complete mess and I cant do anything apart from take pills, sleep and eat creamy food .. everything else hurts!
Hi Kaylesc
I am in exactly the same boat here, mine was removed 8 weeks ago and I have had so much pain since. I am waiting for an endoscopy now but the doctors seem unable to give me any exact reasons for the pain, altered blood tests or the sickness. I came out of hospital a week ago after being in there again for a week, I was still tachacardic without any reason. Take so much pain relief at the moment it's unreal the consultant says it may last 6 /9 months. He hasn't mentioned SOD though.
Well, you all ought to know that these are the side-effects and complications anyone could get after a GB removal. I have been writing about this for quite a bit now that GB removal is not the solution to the problem. If you read some of my posts on this site you will know.
It is a mistake to remove the GB despite what the doctor says, unless of course it is a life & death situation.
Hi Trex, I asked my GP several times if there was another scan I could have rather than removal like the surgeon had suggested. I was told that the only way to be sure it was not cancerous was to take it out and send it to histology.
OMG! that says lot about your hospitals medical practice. Just because your gallbladder was not working correctly with so much technology and equipment available i cant beleive they said that and then took out the GB, Sounds like the old days when they used to do exploratory operations and take something out if they didnt like it. Yeah, i think you have SOOD (Sphincter of Odi Dysfunction) now.
Just because a GB doesnt work properly or theres stones in there - taking it out isn't the solution. Doctors dont look for the originating cause of it to deal with the root of the problem. Its like the saying or the analogy goes that: 'I have a really bad headache am i gonna lose the head ?!' its as simple as that.
If they can treat kidney stones they can treat GB stones - removal isnt necessary, or they can create an artificial GB. With todays technology nothing is impossible - they are just lazy and want to get their pay-cheque.
I would not fall for any excuse (unless it was a real medical emergency)
Hi Trex - I know it's really annoying that you put so much trust in doctors and they are not honest in return. I bet it's about saving money especially quick key hole surgery! The consultant we have now did say that maybe the pain wasn't even from your gall bladder in the first place. I am going to ask about SOOD next time, thank you. Do you reccomend any specific site for SOOD x
Hi boyzmummy,
I have sent you 2 sites for SOOD in a message.
Let me know if you found it useful
Trex
Hi Trex/kaylesc hope you are both ok? Thank you Trex for the information we found it very useful. I have a gastroscope and more blood tests so don't know if that will show enough up! Take care
Hi, well had a few days of feeling a little better then bam ... Its hit me really hard this time. I went to the hospital but the morphine is not helping much anymore I have become too tolerant as I'm on mst also. I am at a loss now. I have been eating so well and haven't pushed myself too hard so have no idea what has set it off this time .... I have no idea what do with myself apart from lie in bed feeling sorry for myself... I'm waiting for an
Appointment from the specialist in Leicester but it's still not arrived yet.
Hope you are feeling better than me!
Oh no poor you, but yes I understand that perfectly and it's so frustrating thinking you have been so careful then boom! Have they performed the stent yet? Not sure what MST is, sorry. Are you still in hospital? Will PM you x
Hi boyzmummy,
hows the boys ? lol., yeah im awight, im 3 weeks into recovering from my wrist fracture op.
Glad to know you found the information/websites helpful.
All the symptoms point to GB removal after-effects and now there doing a gastroscopy ? gastroscopy is for if you have stomach problems.
Anyway, see what they come up with
@kaylesc: yeah, after GB removal doctors just go from one assumption to another but i dunno why they dont understand these new problems are as result of having the GB taken out.
anyway, hope you the best with your appointment with the specialist
Oh no hope your wrist mends soon Trex. I think it must be to rule things out.
My last blood tests also said I had low calcium serum levels, so they are checking that again too.
yeah, thanx, im half way on the road to recovery, if i had a cast on and without the operation it would have taken double the time and i wouldnt have been able to move even my hand now. I feel relieved i had the op (was reluctant at first) because i can now already use my hand its not restricted in a cast, instead its being held internally with a metal plate and screws.
oh ok, did they say anything about vitamin D levels ? my vitamin D is low and vitamin D helps absorb calcium.
Thanks guys! MST is Morphine tablets, they are slow release over 12 hours ... Still not working though!
I wish the doctors had told me more about the complications as none of the problems I have were mentioned. I naively expected that it would be fine and I could go back to eating food and drinking beer lol The reality is I cant half as much as when I was on my low fat diet, I cant drink at all ... I havent got a life!
The annoying thing is that my results keep coming back negative ... When there is clearly something wrong with me ... The ambulance man yesterday said that I shouldnt be bringing up as much bile as I am when I vomit ... I am getting a bit desperate now I just want someone to fix me!
I think the scary thing is reading so many posts that people have been putting up with this for years .... Im only 26 my life has just begun not ended!!!
I have lost more weight this week .... im gonna end up looking anorexic at this rate!
@kaylesc I'm sorry to hear about your suffering. Looking at what the paramedic has said is right, shouldnt be bring up too much bile. Doctors wont tell you everything because the NHS is a huge industrial complex, they dont have time and you have to do your own research these days but dont worry you'll be okay soon. You are young gal and things will get better, you have a long life ahead of you.
Hi Trex/@kaylesc ,
That's good Trex I didn't realise the healing time was reduced so much.
I don't know my vit D levels but I'm going to ask.
@kaylesc it will get sorted, if you know the name of the consultant call his secretary and bring the appointment forward. Go to your GP they can fast track appointments.
Hi how are you today? I had the gastroscope yesterday, he just said that there was some inflammation and bile, he took a tissue sample for testing! The written report will go to the consultant for my appointment. I didn't have any sedation as it meant staying in the hospital longer and to be honest I've had enough of them lately. Not a procedure I would like repeat in a hurry though.
hello, im awight, you awight ? ;-)
yeah, inflammation does cause pain, so the consultant will give you the full report,
how was the gastroscopy without sedation ?
wish you the best
have a nice weekend
Hi ok thanks didn't realise that could be the cause,
Bloods again yesterday and then the consultant can start putting together the pieces!
The Gastro was more uncomfortable than painful, it made my eyes water, it made me gag quite a bit. Weirdly I could feel them insert the second rod and could feel the pinching when they took a biopsy.
I just wanted them to stop talking and get on with it although the whole team were lovely people. Would not want a repeat :-/.
Lovely weather again today I hope, how's that arm??
