I had TKN , saw consultant 14 days after , not being seen by him for 6 months , is this wrong ??
I'm having terrible trouble , pain back of my leg ,what could that be?)
It's usual to see the consultant at 6 weeks, & then again 3 months after that - then the normal route is discharge if all is OK. (That's the UK). You need to get this checked out, start by asking your GP for a referral back to the consultant - that could be the quickest way - OR - if you were discharged with a list of phone numbers for the consultants secretary etc - give them a call tomorrow.
I will chase it up tomorrow! I did think it strange , thanx
Have you had a replacement Veronica?
I would contact the doctor's office and get in to see him as soon as possible because the terrible pain in the back of your leg isn't right. You definitely should be seen sooner than 6 months, but if you're having some unusual symptoms like back of leg pain, it could be a sign of something more serious going on besides normal pain from the replacement. Usually, a patient is put on blood thinners for a couple of weeks following knee replacement to avoid developing a DVT (deep vein thrmobosis/blood clot). Also, an nfection wouldn't be unusual after TKR and it's definitely something to be alert for.
i dont where you hail from but here in. ireland after tkr you see surgeon at the 6wk check up to get xray and for him to look at the knee and answer any questions and thats it you dont see him again even if your private !! at six months you get hospital appointment to xray again and see the nurse she decides if you need to see him again and if she thinks you should she contacts him. i think its crazy here how come a nurse decides she is not a surgeon far from it no matter how good she is its wrong .seeing him at 6mths is good i wish we had that system by then you will know alot more how the leg is responding ,but in saying that i think you should see him at 6wks also .
Oh yes!! I had my TKR on the 27th Oct 2014, it was misaligned, & also mechanically loose, so after a year of pain - I had a revision TKR on the 27th Oct 2015 - now just over 10 weeks, & all going fine. This forum has been my salvation - as I seem to be going along fine, there will come a time (soon, I think) when it will not be the 1st thing I look at every day!!
Oh god there's a thought now😢 but onwards +upwards 👍👍👍
I intend too!! Thanks , what about returning to work ??
pain at the back of the leg is it more the back of the knee area?? if so it might need you to stretch it more and straighten it out surely by now you are getting physio ,it would help alot and also they could answer your questions we all had so many at your stage but dont worry ive had them pains excersise did help alot ,my first port of call would be contact the hospital to see when you start physio make sure you start A.S.A.P.
I'm from South Wales! + hoping to have the othe one replaced asap! Already back on the cortisone injections !!
Out of curiosity how long did everyone have to wait?
I'm in the USA and this last TKR was done last month. My other knee was in 2012. I had two different surgeons and each one had a protocol for post-op management that was a different as day and night. After my most recent replacement, I was placed on an anticoagulant Lovenox which I self-injected for 14 days. After the 14 days, my surgeon ordered an ultrasound to rule out any deep vein thrombosis. Then I saw him again six weeks post-op and will see him in six months. He is extremely cautious about DVT and I think it's smart that he is.
im not working but it would depend on what type of work you do ! if its phyisical you would need alot more time but no matter what work you do id say no less than 4mths sounds alot of time off but there is so much healing going on in there the scar healing is short but under that scar its muscle ,weakness, tendons and ligaments all have suffered and all that takes time .even if you can sit down alot at work too much sitting is not good at the begining it stiffens up so you will have to move about at intervals good luck with the recovery .my bi lateral didnt go too well and i had to have a revision so my road is going on a long time over 3yrs and im still stretching my leg with weights on my knee to push the knee down to straighten it because if its not straight you have a limp and thats not good so do both the bend and straight leg
I had a lot of back of the leg pain as well. I spoke to my physio about it when I went. I thought my hip was gone, it was crazy. It turned out to me my hamstrings were very very tight. In the same office there was a massage therapist. Got to see her and she was the answer. So I was going to both for about 5 times. I went back to work at 12 wks. I'm 13 mets post tkr and I'm far from perfect but I count my blessing because I'm not having the grinding pain like before. I can walk, work and have fun with the grandkids. Waiting on the other knee now. I saw my surgeon at 6 weeks and 12 wks. I was discharged then. Good luck.
Hi,
I saw my surgeon 5 weeks after the op and then 3 months later. i have now been discharged from the surgeon and the physio and it is quite scary having no one to turn to to discuss the worries and niggles that occur. The surgeon did say to ring him if I had any problems, but I would only do this if I had serious concerns.
I am 22 weeks now and things have gone fairly smoothly, but even now, I am still sometimes suffering from some tight muscles in my leg, particularly when walking down stairs and odd pains seem to come and go. I do not know how I would have coped without this forum!
When suffering with muscle tightness, I often soak in a hot bath anmd most of the aches and pains disappear after a while so hopefully when all the muscle tightness has gone, things will be OK.
I am thinking of contacting a private physio that I used to see before the operation so I have someone to touch base with and discuss things. I am not sure whether I should still be doing some exercises, but over Christmas they seem to have been forgotten.
As someone said though, my knee is much better as I do not have the grinding pain, I can walk long distance and do the things that I wish to do.
Oh well all seems good with you !! X
Yes that grinding gone thank god! I too am waiting for the other one to be done!! I'm 8 weeks now , but don't feel well enough to return to work, thank you 👍
Oh so sorry to hear that . Hope 2016 be the year to be fully mobile + pain free x
