long term effects of taking zythromax for copd

Hi, I have been taking zythromax on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, my consultant doesn't know what the long term effects will be. Has anyone else had long term usage of this drug? Any replies would be welcome. I'm new here as somebody who lives with copd, i've just discovered this site. Thanks

Good question Kat   I am on Azithromycin too, and so I am interested in any replies you get...I would also like some input as to how long the affects of the AZI  lasted, before it no longer worked

My cons  just said to me that I would be on this drug for the rest of my life, which is fine by me  IF  it keeps the infections at bay as it does seem to be doing

So hopefully some long term users will reply to this discussion

One side effect is that any antibiotics, including Azithromycin, kill the "friendly bacteria" in your intestines which keep yeast (candida) from overgrowing and causing digestive problems, including yeast infections, as well as other health problems. Find a good quality probiotic supplement in your health food store. Yogurt does not contain enough... especially for people who are taking antibiotics often. Also, understand that all antibiotics  will lose effectiveness over time. Give serious consideration to building your own immune system....find a naturopathic doctor who can help you with this. Certain vitamins and minerals are ESSENTIAL for a strong immune system (beta carotene, vitamin c, vitamin E complex, vitamin B complex, zinc, magnesium) as well as several medicinal herbs. A Naturopathic doctor will prescribe a high quality vitamin/mineral supplement.  Things that weaken your immune system are: constant stress, lack of sleep, smoking, too much caffeine, too much sugar, processed foods and junk foods, lack of exercise, use of steroids. As your immune system strengthens, your need for antibiotics lessens since your body becomes better able to fend off infectious bacteria. Many people who have built up their immune systems are able to eliminate their dependence on antibiotics, and only need them on rare occasions. Also...find out if you are being exposed to mold spores in your home or workplace. It cannot always be seen. Mold test kits are inexpensive and very easy to use. I discovered that my main problem was black mold and aspirgillus mold. It can cause symptoms and mucus that resemble an infection. By getting rid of the mold, or avoiding the mold-ridden environment, you may find your health improves.

One doctor told me I would be on 10mg prednisone a day for the rest of my life. I was determined not to have to do this knowing the serious side effects of long term use of steroids. Well, he was wrong. By making certain changes, i have reduced my dose to 5mg and am on my way to getting off the stuff completely.

I hope this is helpful.  Jan
