Long term urinary cathering

I am in a situation where I will be faced with long term urinary cathering.   My Uro has shared with me the need to consider long term cathering. He has told me of two system, Foley or Suprapubic.  Want to know comments of either system for long term. Thanks,

Hi Yoshi,

There is a third method, and in most cases, it's the most preferable method. That's self cathing (CIC). Did your Uro mention it? If so, is there a reason you can't do it?

CIC has less incidence of UTIs than either Foley or Suprapubic, but its biggest advantage is that you're not hooked up to something 24/7.

If for some good reason you can't CIC, I personally would choose Suprapubic over Foley. Less incidence of UTI and no tube in the urethra.

Jim

I agree with JimJames.  I've been doing CIC for three years and it sure beats either of the options your doc gave you.  If CIC is a possibility (WITH HYDROPHYLIC ---self-lubricating---CATHETERS!  We can give you good reasons to use these)

Have you considered medications or procedures ? Hank

......But he or she has left out the third system: Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC). True, this one does depend on certain factors being present (healthy urethra, you having reasonably good dexterity.). Why not ask your uro about this one? Wishing you luck in your endeavors. Alan.

Sorry, I hadn't read the other posts! They are all good ones. Go for any of them if you possibly can. Alan'

Yoshi, we have quite an assembly here of people doing CIC, guided by Jim James. Join in if you can.

Personally, I have had Foley for a couple of days on end, two times, and I prefer CIC. Z

I was introduced to CIC on here and it was good advice, but currently have Foley installed as cannot CIC due to being unable to get it past my Prostate. Never had Suprapubic but think it would avoid having a sore penis and bypassing which happens to me quite often with Foley.

Foley every time for me. Couldn't C.I.C. and didn't get on with Suprapubic a few years ago. Once you get used to the Foley, and they use the correct Fr which avoids bypassing, it becomes a part of you and a way of life.

I probably should have explained my condition. I have a stricture that is stubbornly closing up. I've been dilating but it doesn't last a week. It's one of the largest options i need to consider I probably will have surgery to open it up but my Uro feels there is a high chance I will become incontinent because it is next to he spinster. If this happens we need to consider these options. I have been CICing with dilation to try to keep the uretha open but no luck. I have been cathering 5 times a day so is not new to me. I presently have a Foley since last weeks dilation. He wants me to keep it for at least three weeks to get a feel of it being in long term.   That is the reason I'm asking what people with either system feels long term effects  I need to decide if cathering 5-6 times a day vs permanent draining is the better option.  Thanks for all the input. I would like to hear from people who currently have either system.

Yes I am under Dr care

I would definitely consider the suprapubic if CIC isn't a good option. With a suprapubic, there's no tube in your urethra. Plus, if you get a Flip-Flo valve, you don't have to walk around with a bag. You just flip the valve when your bladder fills up and empty into the toilet.

Jim

Thanks, I too have Foley installed now too. Uro wants me see how it feels having it in longer than a week. I wonder how it feels long term. I need to hear from anyone who currently have a Suprapubic. Wondering how it feels it protruding out of the abdomen and how it's held in place going to the drain bag etc.  My Uro said you won't know it's there but you gotta hear from people who live with it. Thanks all for the comments.

There are studies out there on suprapubic versus Foley. Patient satisfaction favors the Suprapubic. You should also know that the suprapubic is very easy to reverse. They just pull it out and the small hole in the abdomen heals very fast. I don't see any downside at all to trying it. Don't like it, just have them take it out and go back to the Foley.

Jim

What was the issue you didn't get along with Suprapubic? If you don't want to reveal that's okay

Was your stricture a result of a previous surgery ? Hank

Yes, I would say it was the result of my TURP in Februsry 2017.

toby52 just had his suprapubic put in a while back. Another woman on the kidney forum had hers for 30 years. She said no problems, only 2 UTIs ever. Hanks

toby52 got stricture from a GL this year also. Hank

Hank1953, I have also read that a Suprapubic can give your urinary system a rest and help to clear infections, and just wondered if you had any comments on this ?.
