I am a pathologist planning to schedule cataract surgery soon.
I would like to know the outcome of IOL use for microscopic tissue diagnostic work. Looking for feedback from anyone who had cataract surgery and doing microscopic work post-surgery. I was advised to go for Symfony lens by my ophthalmologist. What type would be the best for me for my work. Prefer multifocal, but like to know if monofocal would be better.
Unfortunately, too many people seem to have blurry day vision as well night vision issues (such as halos and glare) with multifocal lenses. A Symfony lens will be a better choice (have that in my right eye), but also has associated night vision issues such as multiple circles or halos. Monofocal lenses will provide the sharpest vision and will cause the least night vision issues, but will require glasses at distances different from the one for which the lens is selected to provide the best focus.
I am not sure how many on these forums are in your field of work / have your specific requirements.
Just a suggestion - you may want to seek out consultation from a few opthamologists as they work with microphones in cataract surgery. Ask them if they were faced with cataract surgery what they would choose. I would think (just my guess) you'd want balanced vision and not one eye targeted for distance and one for near ( monovision or mini monovision).
As a201 mentioned there are compromises with eachnlens and no perfect one at this point in history. I chose Symfony lenses in both eyes and see well from 11 inches out. I work with computers and spreadsheets so for me Symfony lenses allow me to work and do any task well. I have not worn glasses in 3 weeks. Still waiting for my 1 month post op check up later this month.
Overall I am very pleased with the outcome . The one downside is nighttime driving due to glare and concentric circles around light sources. I drive fine in well lit areas that have overhead streetlights however find it difficult on dark roads - highways. Glare from oncoming headslughts particularly bothersome. Inside lights do not cause me any problems.
Wish you all the best.
Sorry (dislike auto spell on iPhone) meant seek out consults from a number of opthamologists as they too work with microscopes.
