Loose cup

My Birmingham hip replacement was 10 years old on the 16 th of this month.
Last month i had my annual check up and after looking at the xray, the consultant said the joint may have moved!!
Uptil till then i had never given my hip any thought from one check up to the next.
The letter says
‘Xrays show well fixed femoral component in relation to the acetabular components, there may be some movement in the cup and this will be removed in 6 months’ time with further x rays’
The wording of the letter is a puzzle and i couldnt get hold of anybody at the hospital

Has anybody else had a loose cup and what does it feel like??
I’m now aware of my hip whereas before, i wasnt but there’s no pain yet
Cheers
Larry

LARRY I THINK THEY MEAN REVIEWED IN SIX MONTHS WITH FURTHER XRAYS NOT REMOVED darn sorry about the caps too lazy to retype it dont worry if its feeling good.

Hi,

Please do not be in a hurry to replace the loose cup unless it is causing problems.
I recently had the cup replace for the 5th time as well as the pelvic bone rebuilt with bone grafting.
My first hip replacement was in 1980, lasted for 12 years. During this time I was very active, sport, building and trekking . Fully replaced in 1991 by a new specialist who has passed away. He did not do a good job and repeated it twice more before I found an excellent specialist who replaced it in 2000. It has served me well dispite the Greater Trochanter being detached.
About 2 years ago I injured it and have put up with the pain, at times quite servere and it would seem to come good again. Two months ago it completely went and became unbearable to walk on. Up to this stage I was very active and regularly rode my road bike.
My specialist who no longer operates referred me to his associate who is a specialist in bone grafting.
He replaced the acetabular component [cup]. As well he rebuilt my damaged pelvic bone postioning the cup in its right place and for the first time in 40 years my legs are the same length.
I now have to be patient as I trust the bone grafting takes while I’m on crutches.

Bridget
I hope you’re right and will let you know later today after I’ve phoned the hospital up.
Of all the scenarios I’ve been through in my head, a typo wasn’t one of them

Neil
At the moment there is no pain but I’ve now ceased hill walking and cycling as I’m due a partial knee replacement and lethargy has set it.
When my hip problem first surfaced I’d been a keen runner and very active and went from veteran athlete to couch potato very quickly.
Once I’d followed my doctors orders and taken up cycling the aches and pains from doing nothing, went, apart from the hip anyway.

I think Bridget might be right, a loose cup would need attending to promptly, and would be very painful.
Graham

Graham, you and Bridget are both right, I’ve just got in from work and rang Wrightington hospital, it was a typo and should have been ‘received’
I demanded the typist gets a kick up the ar5e hahaha

Jesus I’m at it now. It’s reviewed
