Hi Belinda
How awful for you!! I have been going trhough the same thing for a yar now - multiple trips to the hospital with no solutions, and horrible pain. In one case, the hospital didn't believe I was in pain, and told me I only came there to get a dose of morphine (the last thing I wanted). Losing weight is definitely part of IBS - I've lost 50 pounds in the last year, and am so thin. I follow the diet (no fats, etc.) but it doesn'tt seem to work - the attacks come with no warning - I have no idea what sets off these attacks.
My sincere sympathy to you.. have you been through the hospital/doctor visits?
My sincere sympathy to you - I wish I could offer you better avice.
Hi Guys
Have either of you tried the low fodmap diet, I was struggling so bad for years until Jan this year when I cut out so many foods that I thought were good for me but were infact bad, Apples being one, I'd also lost weight, but since Jan I've put half a stone back on, give it a try Its certainly working for me
Pre IBS diagnosis to post IBS diagnosis a loss of 3 stone and 2 of those were in approx 2 months. It was very noticeable. I still have a fridge magnet which says round is a good shape as I like person who gave it to me.
Thanks Meg. No i hqvent i dont get such horrible pain just a little bit.
Thank u guys for the info
It can be. I went from 189 lbs. to 145 lbs. in under a few months during 2013 when this condition first started to show its mean side. I will stress though that most of that weight loss was due to me cutting back meals to only one a day due to fear of eating and the feared ibs response that would bring. In my mind it was eat 3 meals a day and have more pain and more pronounced bowel problems. I finally broke the self imposed restriction when I hit 145 lbs because I knew I couldnt just keep eating once a day like that. So I slowly added smaller portions through the day to go along with my usual dinner and the weight slowly returned. But yes,IBS can cause weight loss due to the symptoms it causes and a patients response to them like cutting back on meals. As for IBS having a component to it that causes weight loss regardless of diet changes I do not think it has that. If it does its probably minimal.
ibs does not cause weight loss - not eating because of pain/diarrhoea does.
eating less greasy food is certainly a good step, but you just have to make yourself eat regardless of how you feel. it sucks, but it is healthier than starving yourself.
try eliminating common triggers like caffine, dairy, wholegrains, fiberous veg, alcohol.
Thank u for info
I lost 2 stone before I even changed my diet. It is hard to believe stomach complaints can have such a large effect.
I can't believe the effect of somach complaints can have such a devestating effect. Even with the right diet (no fats, etc.) I still get attacks.
Me too
what I was implying was the only difference to my body whilst I was losing the 2 stone was visiting the loo a lot more. It is hard to believe that one could lose so much weight this way.
I did not know what was wrong with me for a long time as typical chap I did not go to the doc for 2 years as I would talk myself into it being a stressful week, maybe too much wine, did I cook the chicken for long enough? I am sure I am not the only one who went through this pattern of thoughts.
In fact once I started to watch what I was eating and exercise more I only lost a further one stone.
PS I may still get attacks but they are far les frequent and I have fewer attacks.
True - but it was a long process before I realized this. Also adding Creon 10 for pancreatis helps, pluseliminating fats. Always stayed away from burgers
