Loss of sense of taste for decades

Just wondering if there are any conditions or infections of the digestive system that can cause loss of sense of taste? Thanks

Hi,
I’m not sure if there can be complete loss but GERD does leave a bitter taste in the mouth (quite literally) and so food tastes unusually bitter or spicy.
This causes loss of appetite too.
Have you checked for other conditions?
Like nasal polyps, irritated/damaged nerve or something of the sort.
They say most taste disturbances are actually due to smell disturbances so getting the smell/nose part clear could help.
I’d say take a second opinion from your gp regarding this.

I saw an ENT doctor and it was a complete waste of time. I was told there is nothing I could do about it and he didn’t know what was causing it. My nose and throat were fine according to the ENT doctor and I also took a smell test witch I did great on.

So it’s the taste then?
I had lost my smell and taste once but it returned slowly in about 4 weeks.
But I can understand how frustrating it can be when doctors don’t have an answer. I’m currently going through digestion issues and medications aren’t helping. my doc is clueless on how to proceed from here.
